1. Instead of going out, organise an evening at home, playing cards or board games. They’re great fun and mentally stimulating –
and don’t use any extra power. Classic
card games include cribbage, hearts, rummy, canasta, bridge and whist. Board games such as Monopoly, chess,
Scrabble, Scattergories and even Trivial Pursuit are perennially popular.
2. Rent movies, don’t
buy them – it’s cheaper, and you don’t contribute to landfill when you are
finished with them. Similarly, download
(legally of course) music rather than buying CDs.
3. Play golf –
without the cart. Walk to the greens and
carry / pull your own clubs. (Save the
cart fee for the 19th hole).
4. Go powerless in the water. Choose a kayak, canoe, dinghy or inflatable
raft. Have fun and work off a few
calories too.
5. Buy a cheap digital camera
and take a walk in your local area. Photograph things you know well, from a different angle. Film cameras use lots of chemicals to develop
and print – digital cameras don’t. (If
you want to learn a bit more about digital photography, visit this digital photography site - Dewayne
has a knack of making the complex seem simple).
6. If you want to dine out, choose a green restaurant from The Green Restaurant Association (many restaurateurs say green practices
actually save them money).
7. Buy tickets
online – movie, plane and event tickets can be ordered online or by phone. Printing them at home means you use plain
copy paper which is easier to recycle and dispose of than cardboard tickets, especially
those with magnetic strips.
8. Find or buy a pair of good gloves, then choose an area and
pick up all the rubbish there. Will you get it all? No. But at least there’ll be less garbage picked up by the wind.
9. Take a bike –
bikes are eco-friendly, burn some calories and can be a great way of getting to
know your area better. A tandem bike can
be fun too!
10. Go go-karting –
some circuits offer ‘clean energy driven’ karts which are also considerably
quieter. |
