1 Billion Cars

Can the planet handle this many wheels?

Another milestone to consider.  There are now one billion – yes, 1 billion – cars  in the world.

Isn’t that incredible?

The problem is, they all need fuel.   And we’re running out of oil.

How can we manage the environmental impact of such a rapidly-growing industry?

There are no easy answers.

The people at carpooling.com have created a very thought-provoking infographic, to get the world thinking about the effect of car ownership and the alternatives available.

Have a look at it, and tell me what you think!

(You may want to use the Zoom feature on your internet browser if the infographic isn’t big enough – there’s some really interesting information in it!).

  • Hi Clare ~

As usual, you have brought awareness to another growing problem – and one that, I reckon, few people are truly aware of! 1 Billion cars?!? … I know I was NOT aware of that! The graphic was a little blurry, but if you posted it, I know it has valuable information as I look to you as a trusted source when it comes to being EcoFriendly!

  • I never realized there were that many cars on the planet. Mind boggling when you stop to really think about it.

  • That’s A LOT of cars. I like the idea of public transportation. I love using the excellent systems in place in Europe.

  • 1 billion cars? I guess I’m guilty as I have 12 of them. 2 of them are Prius though so really only 11 buy fuel needed.

  • unbelievable to think that there are 1 billion cars in the world. I have to admit that I have wanted to buy an electric car as I have seen more and more in our area. A car dealership has it displayed out front…however it’s so expensive that the average person could not afford it…

  • 1 Billion is a hard number to get my head around. I wonder how many of those are not well maintained and not tuned up well? That only adds to the problem!

  • Thanks for all the comments about our infographic.
We created it with the intention of getting the world thinking about the number of cars on the globe and their affect on the environment. Some of the figures are pretty staggering, and we agree with you it is hard to get your head around them!

We hope it will get the discussion going between you and your friends, colleagues etc about the options to carpool. Check out more information about us and how to car share

    Thanks,

  • I like the idea of just living and working and shopping in one centralized area. It keeps your car off the road and is one less thing to stress about.

  • I never wondered how many cars are in the planet! I just got mine a few months ago…I don’t really used it and was thinking about getting rid of it…What I like from my city is that I can just go anywhere with the bus!

  • 1,000,000,000 boggles the mind. If each car used just 1 liter a day, think of the amount of oil being used.

    Tidy up everyone.

  • Hi Green Goddess,

Wow! 1 Billion cars on the planet. That is a really big number and I certainly had never imagined just how many cars there were in the world until you brought it up as The Ecofriendly Lady. Thanks for helping to increase awareness and for promoting carpooling.
