5 Healthy Habits That WILL Change Your Life!

Easy Ways to Develop Healthy Habits

It’s a sad fact – many chronic diseases are caused by the way we live.  Instead of healthy habits:

  • We don’t exercise as much as we should.
  • We gain weight over time
  • We eat the wrong foods.

healthy habits for a healthy lifestyleThese bad habits can lead to diabetes, heart disease, and even sometime cancer and strokes.

Yet, even though we know all of this, it’s pretty hard to change.

One common problem is that something bad happens to our health and we know we need to do things differently, and so we decide to make huge changes – all at once.

Making major changes to your lifestyle is difficult.

Initially, we start off with lots of enthusiasm – lots of new healthy habits like trying out new exercise routines and changing our eating habits drastically.

But it’s so easy to get overwhelmed with that!

And as soon as we feel overwhelmed, then we stop – and go back to our old (comfortable) habits.

What’s the Solution?

healthy habits not confused It’s miles better (and easier) to simply change one of our healthy habits at a time.

This way, you won’t become overwhelmed and stop trying to be healthy altogether.

Take losing weight for example.  Most weight loss programs work – if you stick to them and if you don’t feel too deprived.

Exercise is successful – if you stick to it and work out regularly. If you choose an exercise that you really enjoy, or if you increase your physical activity more gradually, you can usually stick to the program so that you don’t become discouraged and stop exercising altogether.

The trick with all healthy habits is to begin gradually.

Don’t try any trendy diet or fitness fad. If you try these things with gusto, you are likely to respond negatively and you won’t stick with the programs.

Simple changes that lead to healthy habits will help you to live a happier and healthier life.

So, start with just these 5 changes:

Healthy Habit #1: Eat Just One Healthy Meal a Day

Don’t try to change everything at once. Focus on just one meal (or even just a snack, to really start small) every day that you will change.

One healthy meal each day will feed your body with good nutrition and healthy proteins.

healthy food habitsA healthy meal means eating mostly vegetables, together with some fruit, some whole grains and, if you wish, some lean meat such as a piece of chicken breast fillet or lean pork.

A healthy breakfast for example could be plain yoghurt with fresh fruit and rolled oats. (Always choose full-fat dairy products – because low-fat or fat-free products contain additives that are not healthy).

Or a smoothie full of fresh fruit with kale or spinach tastes great and keeps you feeling full.

Eventually you can gradually add more healthy foods to what you eat every day, but always begin with gradual changes.

In this way you won’t feel deprived, you’ll notice the benefits and you’ll be encouraged to maintain this healthy habit of one healthy meal each day.

Healthy Habit #2: Drink a glass of water before each meal.

healthy habits water Water is probably the best thing you can drink for your health.

But when you drink a glass of water before meals, (an 8-ounce glass or 250ml), you will feel fuller before eating.

That means that you won’t eat as much at that meal.

And that’s good news for weight loss!

It’s easy to do. You won’t feel deprived, instead you’ll eat less AND feel full!

Healthy Habit #3: Be active during lunch

healthy habits at lunch time How long do you take for a lunch break? An hour? Half-an-hour?

It usually doesn’t take that long to eat your meal.

So eat your lunch and then take some time to exercise.  Even if it’s only for 10 minutes.

You don’t have to work out excessively. For example, you  could take a brisk walk.

Not only will this energize you but also it will help burn off the calories you just ate and will aid in the digestive process.

It really doesn’t matter what type of exercise you do as long as you choose something reasonable that will help you feel better after eating your lunch.

Exercising during lunch also helps decrease the stress of your job and will make the rest of your day go easier.

Healthy Habit #4: Use a Healthy Protein Bar for Mid-Afternoon Slumps

Mid-afternoon is when the munchies can arrive, or when you feel tired.

The worst thing you can do at this time is to eat junk food or candy / sweets.

Start gradually. Your habits develop over time. Don’t rush into new things – make them work for you!

Instead, eat a healthy protein bar. Of course there are a lot of protein bars available today – and not all of them are healthy. And some of them are also very high in calories.

Look for bars that contain whole grains, nuts and other healthy ingredients.

Avoid bars with lots of sugars and artificial ingredients.

You can also make your own quickly and easily – that way, you know EXACTLY what goes into them! Here’s a good list of some of the best (and easiest to make) protein bars

Keep a stash of these protein bars in your desk at work or in your purse or briefcase so you can grab one whenever you feel hungry.

(Much better than raiding the vending machines!).

Healthy Habit #5: Exercise Regularly

healthy habits exercise outdoorsYou know it already – you only benefit from exercise when you do it regularly.

If you have a gym membership, try going there at least 3-4 times per week.

Choose an activity you enjoy and make the most of it for at least a half hour per session.

This will help energize you, may build muscle mass, and will help you lose weight by burning off excess calories.

Summary

These 5 healthy habits all make sense, but more importantly, they start you off gradually.

Making huge changes rarely works, but small, easy changes are encouraging and so you’ll stick with them.

And that’s what it’s all about – making it all easy, so it’s not a chore and you enjoy feeling better!
