We know that lemons are great for cleaning.

But did you know that this wonderful fruit is also really useful for your health?

Lemons and lemon water can really improve your health.

lemon water benefits your healthBut first – which lemon water?

Buy or Make Lemon Water?

Of course you can buy it – stores and supermarkets in the Western world are full of offerings like Vitamin Water.

But for goodness’ sake, DON’T buy it!

Why?

make your own lemon waterBecause:

  • You pay an utterly exorbitant price (it’s truly not worth it)
  • You can’t be sure what ingredients are used
  • It’s often sold in plastic bottles which are lousy for the environment and for wildlife (NOT green)
  • And it’s dead easy to make your own

When you make your own (it’s ridiculously simple and very eco-friendly!), you know exactly what the ingredients are, and it’s a fraction of the price!

  1. Just take your normal water.
  2. Either squeeze some fresh lemon juice into it, or add a few slices of fresh lemon to your water.

Couldn’t be simpler!

Here are 5 great benefits of lemon water for your health.

Lemon Water to Cleanse Your Liver

We tend to take our liver for granted – until it gives us problems.  Lemon juice helps to dissolve uric acid and toxins in the body, which leads to a healthier liver.

Just drink lemon water first thing in the morning for the most benefit to your liver.

Lemon water, by the way, will also help to prevent gallstones, so you’ll get double benefit. (Lemon juice will not remove gallstones if they are already there – it’s preventative, not curative).

Lemon Water to Slow Aging

Because fresh lemon juice contains Vitamin C, it can help to slow down free radicals and thus aging. It’s preventative though, not curative, so get started on your daily lemon water as early as possible!

Lemon Water to Strengthen Blood Vessels, Prevent High Blood Pressure

Lemons contain Vitamin P which helps to fight high blood pressure. Again, this is preventative, and needs to be drunk daily to be effective.

Lemon Water to Help Reduce Caffeine Dependency

lemons are non toxic cleaning productsIf you feel you’d like to decrease the amount of caffeine you consume, you may find it easier to do so by drinking fresh lemon juice in water. This is because it provides a bit of a boost. When you need energy, if you automatically reach for caffeine, drink lemon water instead! (It doesn’t work for everyone).

Lemon Water to Improve Immune Response

It’s common knowledge that the high levels of Vitamin C in lemons (and all citrus fruits) help to build our immunity against colds and flu, for example.  That daily drink of lemon water will boost your immunity if consumed regularly.

Did You Know This About Lemons?

The wonderful thing about lemons is that they fruit throughout the year, so they’re always fresh, always in season, and always good for you!

  • I too have been drinking lemon water for years. I began drinking it as a teen to help support my immune system and loved it as a pick me up first thing in the morning as I’m not a coffee drinker. In the colder months I add the lemon to hot water.

Yes, I could buy lemon juice in a glass bottle but it comes with some questionable ingredients. Here’s an article that lists what is in our commercial lemon juices. http://www.simplydixon.com/2011/03/10/realemon-juice-real-or-fake/

    • Lois, it’s a great idea to use lemon water as a pick-me-up in the mornings, it’s miles healthier than coffee (and much more green and eco friendly too!).
I haven’t bought lemon juice in ages and ages, I just squeeze my own, but I’m pretty horrified at what’s in the commercial lemon juice you noted. Honestly, you’d think we should be able to believe “100% lemon juice” when it says it on the bottle. Even in countries where advertising laws are stricter, it’s still a necessity to read the ingredients labels. Sigh.
