Arctic – Why We Need to be Eco-Friendly

Polar Bear on Arctic Ice
Polar Bear on Arctic Ice

It’s really very interesting.

Whatever we do to the Arctic, the Arctic does back to us.  Same with the Antarctic.

If the temperature of the planet rises, more ice melts in the Arctic and Antarctic.  This brings problems and benefits.   Communities living on the fringes of the Arctic benefit from less harsh conditions.  Polar bears and other ice-dependent mammals, on the other hand, suffer habitat loss, and there is increased coastal wave action, causing damage.

As the ice melts, the Earth reflects less light – the light is absorbed by the darker-coloured water instead, which then heats up (and melts more ice), the circulation of the oceans is changed by the retreating ice and rising temperatures, and thawing permafrost releases carbon into the atmosphere.   As the temperature rises, more ice melts…………. and so on.

It is truly a vicious circle.

The official name of it is “positive feedback”.

That’s a very simplified version of what’s happening.   What we do – our industrial processes, our demand for oil and for energy from fossil fuels – all contribute to problems in the Arctic.  And I haven’t even talked about plastic floating around, nor pollution in the air and water.

iceberg protect the arctic I want to protect the Arctic.   I traveled there in 2013.  It is so beautiful.

If we protect it, it protects us.

If we make more eco-friendly choices in our daily lives, and minimise our impact and demands, we can help.

In the far north of Norway, Terje Sorgjerd filmed a natural phenomenon.  He has called it The Arctic Light (there is no official name for it).  It occurs at the time of year when the sun barely goes below the horizon before coming up again.  Sunset and sunrise are connected in one magnificent show of colour and light lasting an incredible 8 to 12 hours.  He used time-lapse photography, and his resulting video is magnificent.

Make eco-friendly choices, and protect our beautiful planet.

  • Hi Green Goddess,

Preserving the two poles is a wise green strategy to follow.

    Happy Dating and Relationships,

  • So many people are crammed into large dirty cities and forget that most of the planet doesn’t fall into that category. They think their actions are only local and locally it’s a city. The arctic and antarctic poles suffer and those poles change everything. Tides and streams change within the ocean which destroys some eco-systems. The saddest part is we could control this problem if more would pitch in.

  • Anything to do with saving or helping the animals of the planet is always a worthwhile cause and one that should always get the most attention!

    Thanks!
