Can your pet infect you? The really short answer is NO.

The slightly longer (but more accurate) answer is NO ….. But ……

Here’s what you need to know.

No Case of Infection

“There isn’t a single case of a pet dog or cat infecting a human with Covid-19,” says Dr Angel Almendros, from City University in Hong Kong.

So, if you saw the news about the tiger at Bronx Zoo in New York being infected, you don’t need to worry.

Animals Can CARRY the virus

It’s possible that your pet may come into contact with a human who is infected. Then the virus might be on their fur or their snout for a while.

Your pet will NOT get sick though. There have been several scientific experiments, mostly in Hong Kong, that showed animals don’t get ill, even if the virus is on their fur.

So humans can infect animals (by coughing or sneezing on them), but animals don’t get sick. Animals can pass on the virus to other animals if they’re in close contact, but they don’t pass it on to humans.  But, just to be extra-super-safe, you can take precautions.

Sensible Precautions

In the unlikely event that the coronavirus is on your pet, you might touch it. But as long as you practice normal hand hygiene, you’re fine.

  • Don’t let them lick your face
  • Don’t touch your face after petting them, wash your hands first.
  • Don’t touch other dogs if you’re out for a walk.
  • Perhaps try to keep your cat indoors more.

These are just sensible precautions to be extra-safe.

The British Veterinary Association said “owners should not worry” about any risk of infection from their pets.

Remember that NO pet dog or cat has infected a human with Covid-19.

Pets offer love and companionship 24/7.  Look after them!
