These Are The Most Dangerous Foods for Dogs
OK, so you know you shouldn’t feed your dog chocolate.
In fact, many of the foods that we love, are really dangerous foods for dogs.
We all need to be careful. We can’t think that we’ll give them a “treat” and give them chocolate – it’s like a poison to them.
So I was very interested to read a most useful poster / infographic which lists many things that are dangerous and toxic to dogs.
One of the most dangerous foods for dogs, for example, is Xylitol, an ingredient in gum that’s also commonly found in baked goods, toothpaste and vitamins, can cause severe liver damage in dogs. It’s an increasingly popular artificial sweetener – and veterinarians are reporting more cases of poisonings.
In addition to being found in food items and dental products, xylitol can also be purchased for baking. It’s apparently safe for human consumption, but even small amounts of the substance can cause low blood sugar, seizures, liver failure or death in dogs.
The poster outlines some of the most dangerous foods for dogs, including walnuts, avocados and mushrooms.
Note that it doesn’t contain information about how much of each food is toxic to a dog – this is because it can differ from animal to animal.
Dogs that have eaten something toxic may show any of these symptoms:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Lack of appetite
- Lethargy
- Painful abdomen
- Seizures
- Coma
If you suspect your dog has eaten something toxic, see your veterinarian immediately.

LOL Marlene, I exclude chocolate from all normal rules. You’re right though, it is interesting that things that are good for us, aren’t good for dogs. I suppose we tend to forget about their wild, carnivorous heritage. Thanks for that insight!
