Don’t Mix Tomatoes With Meat! (Sigh)

Spaghetti Bolognese? Spaghetti with Meatballs? Sadly, Mixing Tomatoes With Meat Is Not Good!

If you enjoy meals like spaghetti and meatballs, or spaghetti bolognese, you might be disappointed with the results of a new study that shows that you shouldn’t mix tomatoes with meat. That is, if you want all the wonderful benefits of tomatoes.

Tomatoes are good for you (although I come out in hives if I eat too many). As many of you know, they contain lycopene, an antioxidant which helps to protect the heart and lower the risk of certain cancers.

Actually, many fruits and vegetables contain lycopene, which is one of the reasons why eating more plant-based food is healthier for us. (And better for the environment too).

Anyway, the study showed that when you mix tomatoes with meat in the same meal, you lose a large part of the benefits of lycopene.

So, can you still enjoy spaghetti with meatballs?

Why Is It a Problem To Mix Tomatoes With Meat?

Meat (and many other proteins) contain iron. And it’s the iron that’s the problem, because when you combine the lycopene with iron, your body can’t absorb the lycopene properly. So you lose the benefits of the fruit and veggies.

Now of course you need iron. Your body uses it for energy and for waste management. But iron likes to steal the spotlight.

Can You Still Enjoy Meatballs?

it's ok to mix tomatoes with meat if you add fruits and veggiesYes! You’ll only get about half the amount of lycopene though. So, here’s what to do:-

  • Add some fresh vegetables to the dish – cooked sweet red peppers are ideal as they’re high in lycopene.
  • And leave room for dessert – enjoy some yummy fresh fruits! Watermelon, guava and pink grapefruit are high in lycopene.

That way, you’ll get enough iron AND lycopene, even if the iron does stop some absorption!
