Earth Hour 2012 - lights out!Imagine being part of a global movement – the Pyramids of Egypt, the Eiffel Tower, China’s Forbidden City, Table Mountain in Cape Town, the Empire State Building, Sydney Opera House and Buckingham Palace have stood in darkness during Earth Hour as symbols of environmental action.

You too can take responsibility for your environmental impact.

Earth Hour 2012 will be huge!

Earth Hour 2012 is a global movement which began in Australia in 2006, organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).  Their mission:  to stop the degradation of the Earth’s natural environment, and build a future where people live in harmony with nature.

But this video can say it better – it’s short, so you can watch it to see what it’s all about, and then below, I’ll show some easy things you can do to play your part in Earth Hour 2012.

So, what can you do?

  • First, look at this world map for Earth Hour 2012 and click the area you live in, to see what’s happening there.  (I particularly like the “I will if you will” challenges).
  • Switch off your lights for Earth Hour 2012, starting at 8:30pm local time on Saturday night, 31st March 2012.
  • Decide what else you will do, after Earth Hour 2012, for more sustainable living.  It doesn’t have to be huge – every little bit helps!
  • If you Tweet, spread the word with hashtag #EarthHour.
  • If you have kids or grandchildren, play this game with them – it’s free to download here
  • Get your business or organization involved in Earth Hour 2012 – it’s easy with these tools

What will I be doing for Earth Hour 2012 and beyond?  I’ll be spreading the word about Earth Hour 2012, and switching off my lights at 8:30pm on the 31st of course.  But I’ll also be continuing – and improving – my water conservation efforts, and I’ll continue to reduce and recycle.  I’ve been fairly successful at reducing my meat consumption, so I’ll consciously have at least one day a week of zero meat.

What will you be doing?
