Eco-friendly Fathers Day Gifts

The Best Eco-Friendly Gifts for Fathers Day

I’ve got loads of green gift suggestions for Fathers Day!

Fathers Day isn’t just for fathers – celebrate it with step-fathers, grandfathers, a favourite uncle, perhaps an older brother – any man who has played a fatherly role in your life.

Naturally, all my EcoExpert suggestions for Fathers Day gifts are eco-friendly, and are sure to please him when they’re given with love.

Organic Grooming by Herban Cowboy (I love the name!) offers vegan-certified cologne which is free of synthetics and dyes, and uses soy-ink print on bio-degradable and recyclable packaging.

Light up the patio or garden for $15 with Wild Grass Solar Garden Lights. 3 Sprigs of 1.2 Foot Tall Grass.

Charitable Hankie from Hickoree’s: this cotton pocket square (13” x 13”) has a Japanese character printed on it which is an old name for Japan. It is pronounced “wa” and roughly translates as harmony / peace / balance.

If Dad loves to cook, get him some eco-friendly bamboo kitchen accessories like these chopping boards from $12. Totally Bamboo 20-7930 3-Piece Cutting Board Set

Consider a pair of Veja Mediteranee Sneakers made from Fair Trade Certified 100% organic cotton and sustainably harvested Amazonian rubber.  They are made in a Flo-Cert and EcoLabel certified factory in Brazil.  They come in different colours, from $85.

Dad can re-charge all his electgronic devices from the sun with this rugged foldable charger $80. Goal0 12301 Nomad 7M Solar Panel

Samsung’s Restore and Replenish phones are made with a high percentage of recycled materials and avoid environmentally harmful PVC.  They are almost totally recyclable after use, are energy-efficient, their booklets are recyclable and printed with soy ink and their manuals are in digital download format to further save materials.  Various service providers.

The hydro-powered shower radio is cute! It uses a micro water turbine to produce the energy needed to operate.  Simply attach it to the shower unit, then plug the shower hose into the bottom of the unit, so that the water runs through the unit and then goes through to the shower head.

This suggestion depends upon you and your dad, but why not consider some DIY projects – perhaps there are projects around the house that Dad hasn’t had the time to complete?   Let him relax while you complete them for him.  Or give him “I’ll take care of it” coupons (on recycled paper of course) so that he knows stuff will get done.

A Kindle is a wireless e-book reader.  Dad can browse, read and buy e-books, newspapers, magazines, blogs and other digital media.  Save trees by reading electronically.  Currently on special offer from Amazon.

Ask Him Out

Well, isn’t Father’s Day the perfect day to ask your dad out for a “date”?  Spend some quality time with him – first, find out what he would like to do, then spend the day with him – hike, play ball in the park, swim, surf, sail, play tennis…….. whatever it is that you would both like to do, get outside and spend time with him, catching up and just chatting and having fun.

My favourite gift is still to come…..

OK, this is my absolutely favourite gift for Dad.  It’s touted as being the perfect gift for the Dad who has everything.  I disagree.  I think the giver would need to have everything.  Or at least a lot of cash.  This gorgeous little toy is a snip at $3,000.  What am I talking about?  A solar-powered automatic lawn-mower.  It’s a hybrid – solar powered and also electric – the little dear goes and finds its own way back to the charging station if there’s not enough sun.   It’s quiet.  And it looks really cute too.  But best of all, you go off to work, and when you come home, the lawn is mowed for you.  I just love it!  (I’d also love to know what my dogs would do to it.  It would be on their territory, after all).  But I don’t think I’ll be finding out any time soon.  (I’m not a Dad).

But when it all comes down to it, please remember that Father’s Day doesn’t need to be all about consumerism. It’s a day to let your dad or father-figure know how much you truly appreciate him and love him.

  • These are awesome ideas. I can’t think of a better way than the hankie because it serves 3 purposes. You will be giving a gift to your father, the environment, and the people of Japan who surely need it.

  • Clare,
These are all great ideas for Dad. I especially agree with your last sentence that it’s all about appreciating him.
Since my dad has everything, I think sponsoring a turtle would be a great idea. I have this thing about turtles anyway, after watching a sea turtle bury her eggs and helping some hatchlings get to sea while in the Yucatan.
    I’m appreciating this post.

I like the idea that we can save some green (dollars) while giving green thoughtful ecofriendly presents to the men who matter in our lives, whether it is our own father or the dads who are the fathers of our children.
