Eco-Friendly Home Office – Set-up

Make it an Eco-Friendly Home Office with these Useful Tips

home office deskIf you work from home, your work space is very important to enable you to be productive. Even if you have an office job, you may need some space to work at home – these easy greening tips will work well for both requirements.

Each of us needs and wants a different space, so think about what is important to you.

  • How much space do you really need?
  • How much storage do you need? (Consider what you will need to store, and what would be nice to store close at hand).
  • Do you prefer a clean work surface with everything close but tidied away, or everything you use regularly on your desk and to hand?
  • Do you want privacy, or do you want an office space big enough that your kids can work on their computers in the same area as you? If you prefer privacy, then unless you have a home office with a door, you may need to explain to your family / housemates that when you are working, you are in a “Do Not Disturb” zone.

You need to plan for:

  • adequate light – try to have as much natural light as possible
  • sufficient ventilation
  • enough power points
  • space for at least one plant to help to offset the emissions from your electronic equipment (see 6 Plants that will Grow Anywhere)
  • hard surface flooring or a mat close to the desk, so that your chair can move around

There are no right or wrong answers, but because this area is part of your home, you do need to be organised.

Whether or not you will receive clients into your home office, you still need to keep it neat stylish and functional.

After all, this is where you think and generate ideas! Your surroundings should enhance your creativity and energise you.

Once you have planned what you want and need, it is time to look at furniture and equipment for your home office

  • When my office becomes messy I feel trapped and can’t do a thing until the problem is solved. I do a lot of work from home and a green home office is the way to go.

    • You’re obviously a much neater person than me! My home office is green but not neat – I have good intentions but then life gets in the way (that’s my excuse anyway). Well done on having a neat AND green home office!

  • A home office while being comfortable can easily get to be one of the messiest rooms in the house. Its a constant battle keeping it clean! I can’t wait to see some of your ideas for improving it!

    Thanks!

  • I have to put up my hand and admit That my desk is in need of some attention . I am interested in your ideas Clare .

  • Another good tip is if you have a printer and find yourself printing lots of documents (Not recommended but some people have to!), don’t throw away waste printer paper. If it’s printed on one side simply cut up the pages into thirds, clip together several of them at the top and you have your own eco notepad! Remember to recycle the pages afterwards.
