5 Tips for Building an Eco-Friendly Horse Barn

If you Keep Horses, You Need an Eco-Friendly Horse Barn!

Horses need to stay in a barn that is not only comfortable but also safe. However, with the current need to go green, your horse barn also needs to be eco-friendly.

An eco-friendly barn is one built using environmentally friendly materials, uses renewable energy, uses rainwater and is designed to ensure efficient use of resources.

Here are helpful tips in building an eco-friendly horse barn.

  1. Construct the barn using eco-friendly materials

There are plenty of environmentally-friendly materials you can use to build the barn such as recycled stall matting and sustainably harvested wood. Also, you can find low VOC paints.

You will not find a specific list of eco-friendly materials. You need to find out if the materials or products you intend to use when building the barn are sustainable.

  1. Use Sustainable Energy

An eco-friendly barn should use renewable energy. Opt for energy sources such as wind and solar. Also, capitalize on natural ventilation and solar lighting.

To avoid wastage of energy, construct a barn that is within your needs since the larger it is the more energy it will use.

  1. Ensure proper ventilation

Your eco-friendly horse barn should have proper ventilation to ensure the indoor air is of high quality. Poor ventilation can pose health risks to the horses and humans considering that the barn has dust and dirt. The dust has been known to cause respiratory diseases in horses.

Construct the barn to utilize natural ventilation to keep dirt and dust at bay. This will leave your barns indoors healthier for the horses and humans because the air will be of high quality.

Other than proper ventilation, you can ensure there is good quality air inside the barn by using paints with low-VOC.

  1. Design the Barn for Efficient Use of Water

An eco-friendly horse barn should be built such that it prevents wastage of water. Put structures such as gutters and downspouts in place that can be used to collect rainwater. Collect the water in cisterns or rain barrels.

Even better, you can install a green roof. It will capture rainwater and treat it.

The water has many uses such as water horses, bathing them and watering gardens.

The bottom line is to build the horse barn that captures rainwater and uses it efficiently.

  1. Follow the barn safety rules

You want your horses to be safe. That means you should follow barn safety rules when building your eco-friendly barn.

Ensure the barn is large enough such that the horses and humans can move safely. The aisles should be wide enough to allow two horses to pass or a horse to turn around. Build high ceilings such that the horse’s head cannot reach the ceiling.

Make sure that electrical wiring, switches, plugs, and light fixtures are out of horses’ reach. Have them covered with metal boxes and protect bulbs in metal cages.

The floor should have good traction. You can use gravel, although you can use concrete or rubber stall mat, just make sure they are texturized.

Have many trash containers in and near the barn to prevent the garbage from being thrown around.

Use unbreakable materials for windows. You can further protect them using steel bars. Just make sure the material is eco-friendly.

In everyday life you are surrounded by products with dangerous toxic ingredients (you’ll be shocked at where they hide!). But you CAN avoid them – when you know how. Find out how to protect your family and keep them safe now.
