Eco Friendly Make Up – Eye Shadow

Eco Friendly Make Up – Eye Shadow for Eye, Skin Health

eco friendly make up - eye shadowIt’s important to use eco friendly make up in order to avoid potentially toxic ingredients in many commercial make up products.

Luckily, eco friendly make up is easy to make, and miles cheaper than most store-bought cosmetics.

This is Part 2 in a series of articles. If you missed Part 1, which listed common ingredients and a few things you need to know before you start, as well as how to make eco friendly blush or blusher, it’s here.

The Problem with Eye Shadow

Most commercial eye shadows use talc (hydrous magnesium silicate) as an ingredient.  Talc has an uncertain safety record.

As the eye is such a fragile area, I think it’s wise to be as safe as possible and use eco friendly eye shadow.

The purpose of Eye Shadow

Will Eco Friendly Make Up be Right for You?

We’re all different (luckily!). Some people love a particular brand of cosmetics, others find it doesn’t “work” for them.

It’s the same with the recipes below – they’ll work for most people, but they might not be perfect for you.

Try them out and see for yourself – they’re not expensive so you won’t have made a huge investment!

  • For black or grey eye shadow mix activated charcoal with arrowroot powder
  • For orange eye shadow combine saffron with beetroot juice

A Note on Mica Powder

eco friendly make up - eye shadow pestle and mortar powderMica is a mineral which is mined in many places across the planet. In itself it seems to be harmless. However, sometimes mica has additives which may be toxic.  For example, it can be coated in titanium dioxide – a chemical which is said to be a carcinogen but which others claim to be safe. In addition, some of the dyes used to colour mica are not necessarily safe for our skin.

Always check any mica you buy for additives. Here is a very useful guide which lists the more popular mica colours and whether they’re safe for use or not.
