non eco friendly make up lipstick can be dangerousLead is a heavy metal that is toxic to the body.  For safety reasons, lead has been eliminated from paint and water – but lead is still used in some of the dyes that give lipstick its colour.

Cadmium (a known carcinogen) is another heavy metal that has been found in an alarming number of lipstick products.

Lead and cadmium in lipstick are particularly concerning because lipstick is often ingested directly into the body throughout the day.

If you wear – and re-apply – lipstick frequently, you are probably exposed to non-safe levels of toxins.

This is really very quick and easy to make. Have a clean container ready before you start.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp beeswax pastilles
  • 1 tsp shea butter or cocoa butter
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 drop essential oil of your choice
  • Colour if you wish (optional) – 1/8 tsp beetroot powder for red, or ¼ tsp cocoa powder for brown.
  1. eco friendly make up lipstick is easy to makeUse a double boiler to melt the beeswax, butter and oil.
  2. When it’s all melted, remove it from the heat.
  3. Add the colour if you wish and stir until smooth.
  4. Add the essential oil and stir to mix.
  5. That’s it! Pour it into your container and let it set.

Tip: don’t fill the container to the top as the mixture will expand a little.

The great thing about this simple lipstick is that you’ll get a lovely nude shade without the colour, but if you want colour, you can add as much or as little as you want! Start off with a tiny amount of colour, and add more until you get the exact shade you want.  (You can also add food colour to your lipstick if you wish, just check its ingredients for safety).
