Green, Eco-Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets and Animal Lovers

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets

Here is my pick of eco-friendly Christmas gifts for pets and animal lovers.  These gifts are all green and range from pet supplies to animal-themed gifts – so pets and humans are all covered!

Toys – Eco-Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets - catnipCats love catnip, so gifts with certified organic catnip are purrfect for them!  You can buy 100% certified organic catnip in attractive tins, or toys filled with catnip.

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets - Zisc

For a great pet toy, try the Zisc.  It’s made from Zogoflex, a non-toxic material which is very green.  It creates almost no waste during its manufacture, it’s durable, it’s recyclable – and in this case, the Zisc floats and bounces, and is even dishwasher safe! And it’s soft and pliable, so no damaged doggie mouth.

Grooming & Feeding – Eco-Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets and their Humans

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets - shampooYou buy natural, safe products for yourself, now buy them for your pets too!  This company sources its organic shea butter from a woman-owned co-operative in rural Northern Uganda, uses botanical ingredients and operates Fair Trade. Products are cruelty-free (never tested on lab animals) and a percentage of the proceeds from each sale goes to local animal shelters and protection organisations. Their sulphate-free shea butter shampoo with avocado is suitable for dogs with sensitive skins.  The formula is low-foam and contains absolutely no dyes or fragrances, and is made with avocado, oat, wheat and rice proteins. From about $14.

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets - double feederWhat about a great feeder as a gift for an animal lover? These elevated pet feeders make it easier for your pet to eat and drink. The bowl (which can be used for food or for water) is made from stainless steel – totally safe for pets. What about the wood surround? Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets dog bowlThe finish on the wood means it’s protected and you can wipe it clean with just a damp cloth (no harsh cleaners necessary). Plus the finish is natural, allergen free and safe – even if your pet chews it, he or she will be quite safe! Available in 3 color choices, and different heights. Great for all sizes of dogs and cats – including larger breeds with short legs, and also for puppies.  From about $65.

For Animal Lovers – Eco-Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets and their Animal-Loving Humans

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets - wildlife book If you’re like me, you love animals, and enjoy watching animal documentaries.  Have you ever wondered how they’re made?  Shooting in the Wild – Inside Making Movies in the Animal Kingdom  will give you a fascinating insight into the ethics, politics and finances of making movies – and it’s not all glossy.  I was quite horrified by some of the things that go on in the background; the pressures the filmmakers are put under.  Chris Palmer writes well, and everyone will enjoy his stories of celebrities and rampaging animals.  More controversial are his views on large corporate interests and people like Steve Irwin (don’t get me started on him!).  This book provides an entertaining, controversial and insightful read – it’s recommended reading. About $20. Good for book clubs too!

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets resusable bag dont judge my dog giftOr, how about a slightly cheeky bag for a dog lover? The reusable “Don’t Judge My Dog” shopping bag is made from 100% recycled cotton. It’s also easy (and green) to clean, because you can wash it in cold water if you wish, and air dry it.

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets elephant poo paper

Elephant Poo Paper Another unique gift idea is a note box made from elephant poo (and no, it doesn’t smell!).  Elephants eat a fibre-rich diet so their poo is perfect for paper – it is collected, rinsed, boiled, dyed and separated into thin sheets which dry in the sun and become paper.  Non-toxic dyes and processing methods are used, and these products help protect elephants in Sri Lanka. I think they’re gorgeous!

eco friendly christmas gifts for pets help a shelterHelp an Animal You don’t have to bring an animal home from a shelter to help them.  Donate time, money or pet products / old blankets & towels to your local shelter.  Christmas and the holidays are tough times for shelters.

Alternatively, a great gift for an animal lover would be to ‘adopt’ an animal.  The World Wildlife Fund offers wonderfully eco friendly Christmas gifts – choose an animal to adopt (a panda, polar bear, pygmy elephant, ring-tailed lemur, there are loads to choose from) and your loved one receives a card detailing the ‘adoption’ and a plush toy and photo too. They use the money to work to protect the future of that species.

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts for Pets WWF african wildlife tubOr, close to my heart, give a donation to WWF for an African Wildlife Tub Adoption Kit.  Your loved one will receive an FSC-Certified wooden bucket containing a plush giraffe, elephant and lion, a formal adoption certificate, a 5 x 7 full-colour photo, a species information card, free shipping, and a personal acknowledgement letter to your gift recipient.  The WWF operates in over 100 countries.
