Eco Shampoo Products I recommend
Now that I’ve discussed the problems with many toxic shampoos, and natural shampoos which will also save you money, today I look at eco shampoos that you can buy.
I have researched these pretty thoroughly – yes, it takes a lot of time, but I’ve now done all the work for you.
You can trust my recommendations for eco shampoo.
My criteria for recommending these eco shampoos
- Low or No harmful chemical ingredients
- Cruelty-free i.e. not tested on animals – this means ingredients AND final product
- The company practices green working habits
Now, let me tell you, there are a few products which meet some of these criteria, but very few indeed which meet ALL of them.
You need to know
- Many manufacturers offer products for dry hair, or greasy hair…… this could be simply marketing. Because many of the problems we have with our hair come from the chemicals we use on them, I don’t buy for a “hair type”. I choose products which meet my criteria, try them out, and use the one which I like the most. Often, I find that the gentler shampoos are suitable for any hair type, even hair that is chemically coloured or tinted.
For example, I know people who buy volumizing shampoo because they have limp hair. Fair enough. But in my opinion – and experience – a good hairdresser, who knows enough to suggest a particular cut or style, will do far more to avoid limp-looking hair than any shampoo can.
- Happily for these eco shampoo recommendations, all the products are sold and shipped via Amazon. When you click on the pictures you are automatically taken to the product on Amazon.
Now you know my criteria, it’s time to look at the shampoo products I recommend.
Hugo Naturals Smoothing and Defining Shampoo (Coconut)
This Hugo Naturals product scores a toxin-free zero on EWG, so it’s safe for everyone including babies. There are other “flavours” in the same range, but only this coconut version scores a pure zero.
Acure Shampoo – Moroccan Argan Oil
Acure’s Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo is gentle and scores a creditable 1 on EWG’s shampoo database. It’s fine for coloured / treated hair, and is vegan, gluten free, sulphate free, paraben free, phthalate free and of course cruelty free. Another “flavour” from Acure is Lemongrass and Argan – it’s not quite as pure, it scores a 2 on the EWG database so it’s OK but not quite as good.
You can’t go wrong with these products – try them and let me know what you think!

That Nurture My Body sounds cool! Their company runs 100% off of wind power? Amazing!
Definitely will be trying one of their products soon thanks to you!
Michael
Clare, I had never heard of eco shampoos but then again I have no hair and it is not on the top of my shopping list. Are there other eco friendly grroming products?
Scott Sylvan Bell
LOL Scott, I take your point!
I’m glad you asked, yes, there are genuinely eco grooming products out there, but they can be difficult to find amongst the products which SAY they’re eco-friendly! Naturally, EcoExpert will be researching and making recommendations over the next weeks and months…….
Thanks for your comment!
Wow! It just gets better and better!
Awesome Info!
Looking forward to tomorrow!
Create a great day!
Thanks for the reviews Clare . Will go shampoo free for a while to see what happens .
Clare, in a long line of great articles, this one I felt stood out. The fact that you not only looked into the company, found the EWG skin deep rating and tried them yourself is super impressive and informative. I think you have put great work into eco friendly shampoo which speaks volumes about how you live your life.
Thanks Kevin, I really appreciate your comment!
Clare, have you ever tried Earth Science fragrance free shampoo and conditioner? It is as close to fragrance free as I have found…..it is not listed on the EWG site.
Sonya Lenzo
Hi Sonya, I haven’t tried the Earth Science hair products myself. Their products look good, and they are paraben free which is good, and they don’t test on animals.
Their Fragrance Free Pure Essentials Conditioner gets a green 2 rating on Skin Deep (if that’s the one you use). Some of their products from 2006 got ratings of 5 to 9 which is pretty scary, but they’ve obviously improved as most of their current products that are reviewed rate 1 to 4.
I’m not aware of them making a point of using eco-friendly packaging nor making efforts at being eco-friendly in their office / factory. Perhaps they are, but I don’t know for sure.
And that’s why they didn’t make my shortlist.
But if they work for you (and I know you said many products give you a headache) (and you don’t look your age so you have good genes, and/or good luck, and/or you’re using a great product!) then stick with them (but do consider trying my suggestions – you just never know!). 🙂
Hi Clare!
I know which one I would like to use!
Thanks!

I have to laugh … every time I hear about shampoo being tested on animals, I envision a bunch of monkeys getting their heads shampoo’d ( yeah, it would be funny if the way they test on animals weren’t so cruel! )
Thank you SO MUCH for doing all the work – sharing your criteria – and giving us some helpful choices for ecofriendly shampoos!

Hey Clare,
What do you think about California Baby products? I pretty much exclusively use their stuff and wondering what you think? Thanks!
Andrew
Hi Andrew, most of their shampoos get a 1 (good) rating at EWG (some of their other products have a slightly worse rating) but I think they do a pretty good job.
