The Very Best Eco-Friendly Skin Care

What To Look For in EcoFriendly Skin Care

best skincareMy mother didn’t give me much advice when I was growing up. (Perhaps she knew I wouldn’t listen!).

But one thing she did say was to always buy the best skin care products.  Make-up, she said sagely, didn’t need to be expensive, but skin care – ah, always buy the best skincare products.

As a teenager I was more interested in make-up than skin care – but I’m glad I listened to her. Because it’s never too early to look after your skin. And eco-friendly skin is not only safe to use and good for your skin, it’s also good for the planet you live on!

Here’s what to look for, when you want the best eco-friendly skin care.

Do You Want Your Skin To EAT It?

When you buy skin care products, remember that approximately half is absorbed.  (The rest is washed off and goes down the drain to find its way back into our water).

So you want to buy only eco-friendly skin care products with ingredients that you would be happy to have your skin “eat”.

Eco-Friendly Skin Care Avoids Toxic Chemicals

Ingredients in non eco-friendly skin careAlways check the ingredients label before buying. If there are lots of long, complicated names listed, the product is probably full of chemicals.

One way to avoid toxic chemicals is to purchase organic skin care. But beware! Some skin care products say they are organic, but don’t specific exactly how or why.

Getting organic certification is time-consuming and expensive. But it confirms that organic ingredients are grown without or with minimal chemical pesticides, extracted without chemical solvents, non-GM, and don’t contain petro-chemicals, parabens or other toxins.

Eco-Friendly Skin Care Avoids Perfume

Perfume or ‘parfum’ is an unregistered label – it can mean anything, because the ingredients do not need to be listed. If a product has a smell, it’s probably a chemical additive, because they are cheaper than using pure essential oils for aroma.

Other Things To Look For

  • eco friendly skin care shouldn't have preservativesPlant-based ingredients are great because they’re often non-toxic – but they may be mixed with harmful chemicals so the product may not be safe even if it says “natural”. (Arsenic is also natural). Always check the ingredients.
  • If a product has a long shelf life, it probably has artificial preservatives.
  • Always buy cruelty-free products. There ARE good alternatives to cruel and inhumane testing on animals.
  • Products which have minimal packaging, preferably that can be recycled, are always better too.

Great Eco-Friendly Skin Care

Don’t forget that you don’t need to always BUY eco-friendly skin care. Often, you can make your own, from common home ingredients – raw honey is fabulous, see how to use it for your skin here.

And if you are buying skin care products, check them out on a wonderful website celled Skin Deep which rates hundreds of products on their toxicity.

  • Pai sounds like a truly wonderful product, both because it is “as green as it gets” and because it sounds like it works, too. You can’t ask for more than that in a product!
