Ekobrew Coffee. Drinking Ekobrew is Green and Eco-Friendly

Ekobrew – How to Beat the Coffee Trash without Sacrificing Convenience!

(Quicklinks – Ekobrew – which Keurig coffee machines are compatible?

Ekobrew Issues:  Leaking (Solved) and  Puncture (Solved))

There’s a lot of buzz about Ekobrew.  Let’s look at it.

If you like coffee, you probably love the ease of single-use coffee like K Cup.  There’s no denying, single cup coffee is hugely convenient – and wildly popular.

So popular in fact, that in the US last year, 5 billion (yes, 5 billion!) Keurig K Cups were sold, used and then discarded by customers.  That’s not green!

K-cups are made from non-biodegradable plastic and foil.  Definitely not eco-friendly!

So, if you want to make the best daily consumption choices, but still have convenience, what can you do?

ekobrew make coffee not trash

Enter Ekobrew – a re-useable filter for Keurig K Cup Brewers.  Instead of those nasty (but convenient) little cups, you pour coffee directly into the Ekobrew reusable filter.  Everything else works exactly the same way.  That means you can use your favourite organic / fair trade / shade grown / bee friendly coffee and still have the ease and convenience of making just one cup, quickly.  I like that!

Tell me more about the Ekobrew?

  • The filter is made of plastic, but it is BPA-free, and of course it’s reusable.
  • It can hold up to 14 grams of coffee – many people find K Cups and their competitors offer coffee which is too weak, but not so with this filter.
  • The Ekobrew is often compared to the SoloFill, but it had a few issues, which all seem to have been overcome with the Ekobrew.
  • For example, the Solofill had a stick-out piece at the bottom, which meant that it couldn’t easily stand on its own, and the hollow inside was difficult to clean.  A comment I rather liked on a coffee forum from a very happy user was “Flat bottom…a lot easier to fill the cup up with one eye closed in the morning”.  He also said the hinge was very sturdy.  The filter holds more coffee than the Solofill.
Some Tips I’ve Found Useful
  • There is a Fill Line – but you don’t have to use it!  Just experiment a little, and find the amount that’s best for you.  If you like really strong coffee, then fill up to the fill line.  If you prefer weaker coffee, don’t.  It’s up to you!
  • The Ekobrew is designed to be used with a Medium to Coarse drip grind coffee for the best results.  Not too sure what that means?  Starbucks #8 or #9 is a good example.   If you use a very fine grind, you may get some sediment in your coffee (in many countries, this is seen as proof of a good coffee!).  If you use a very coarse grind coffee, the water will pass through very quickly and won’t extract the most coffee flavour, resulting in weaker coffee.
  • Of course, the freshness of the coffee is important – the fresher the coffee, the better it tastes!

Is it available now?  If so, Where?

You can buy Ekobrew right now at a good price from Amazon.

I think it’s a cool product – simply click on the Amazon button to view or buy!

What about the Keurig or Cuisanart coffee machines?

If you already own a Keurig coffee machine, then please, switch immediately to the reusable Ekobrew filter.

If not, consider buying a machine to give you the convenience, without the waste.

I have already done all the work for you – not all models are compatible with the new reusable feature, but I’ve done all the research and the machines listed below can all use the filter.

You can buy all of them via Amazon – as you know, Amazon are famed for their reliability (they even ship to my tiny tropical island!), and you can buy whichever model makes sense for you – just click on the pictures below for more information and to buy.

In keeping with the convenience of single-cup coffee (which by the way, uses less energy than a traditional coffee machine as it uses only enough to produce one single cup so energy isn’t wasted), here are all the compatible Keurig coffee machines, including one for the office.

Just remember to be green and always use a ceramic cup or mug, not a disposable cup!  And of course, use your own favourite organic / fair trade / shade grown / bee-friendly coffee with it!

  • Clare, I am suprised at how long this concept took to get out in the public. It sure does make sense not to have to use the plastic k cups not only that now you can use whatever coffee that you want instead of having to choose what type of cup you want.

  • At least Ekobrew by Keurig is going in the correct direction. I wonder how long it will take for the brand which George Clooney seems to like so much to also catch up with being at least a little greener.

  • I can proudly say that Naomi and I have brewed a pot of coffee about every day for the last 18 years and have never used a filter. Our Capresso machine was built that way in 1993. I don’t know how much a coffee filter is so I’m sure this saved money. The machine can brew 1 cup all the way to 5 cups and grinds the beans to order. I don’t know if the company is still around but 18 years is a long time to own 1 coffee machine.

  • It is amazing the amount of plastic that we use and that we could be saving not only economically but also for the enviroment. What do you think about all the cups (plastic and paper) that are used in the coffe shops?

    • You’re right Eva, there’s a huge amount of plastic and paper used in coffee shops. Apart from the fact that I always used to burn my fingers on the hot coffee with one of those nasty cups, they add to the litter problem as not everyone disposes of them properly. Plastic is generally much worse than paper. I try to remember to ask not to be given all the little extras which simply add to the litter and landfill problems (I hate those nasty little disposable spoons anyway). If you regularly have take-away coffee then it makes sense to bring your own cup or thermos – nicer to hold, and much greener! Thanks for your comments!

  • Or….you could do what they do in Costa Rica….use a little fabric funnel, put in one cup’s worth of grounds and pour boiling water over it. Every time you want another cup, you add more grounds and pour more boiling water over the grounds. At the end of the day, you add the grounds to your compost heap and rinse off the the fabric funnel for use for the next day! the gadget that holds the funnel and the funnel cost me $2…that’s my new coffee pot!

  • I am a coffee addict – I could never make just one cup.

Thanks for al the research – it is nice to have a website that goes the extra mile.

  • I am always shocked when I go to the States how many filters, plastic or paper cups and other things that are thrown are used!

Is it more eco-friendly to use ceramic or aluminium and then just wash?

    • Hi Eva, yes, definitely anything disposable is not good for the environment. It’s MUCH better to have coffee makers with re-useable filters that you just wash. It takes more resources to manufacture, but then lasts for years. Disposables keep using resources to manufacture, and then they’re thrown away into landfill. Not just coffee machines – plates and cutlery, anything else you can think of. Also, it’s much better to buy better quality everything, which will last, rather than buying cheap and replacing quickly. Thanks for your comment!

  • I would love to try EcoBrew… my kcup only makes WEAK coffee! My question: I have a Cuisinart SS700 kcup machine. Will EcoBrew work with my model?

    • Hi Ruth, weak coffee is a very common complaint with the kcup. I have good news for you – the EkoBrew CAN be used with the Cuisinart SS700! Buy some EkoBrew today (click on the picture in the article and you’ll go straight there), and enjoy “proper” coffee from your Cuisinart, – and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment too!
      Thanks for your question!

  • I’m having a reaction to the coffee made in the K-cup I’m going to give this a try I sure hope it works I do love my coffee

  • […] you can use your own ground coffee. You can also read some additional information about the Ekobrew here. I like the mention of using your own organic or fair trade coffee that might be stronger and […]

    • Thanks for mentioning EcoFriendlyLink on your site! Yes, I hear a lot of comments about weak coffee from the Solofill, the Ekobrew works much better and is proving really popular. Thanks for your comment!

  • I’m hoping on vain that maybe you forgot to add the B130 to the approved list. How can they be so different, yet all take the same k-cups? Thank you for doing all this research, it saved me from purchasing the ekobrew and wasting my money.

    • I’m glad you found my site useful – indeed the B130 is definitely NOT compatible with Ekobrew! Thanks for popping by!

  • Greatly appreciate the positive review. A couple of points. We are not affiliated with Keurig or Green Mountain Coffee. Ekobrew is wholly owned by Eko Brands, LLC.
Also, we are now manufacturing the Ekobrew in the USA.
    Thank you!

    • Thanks Gary, that’s great news that Ekobrew is now being manufactured in the USA, thanks for letting us know!

    • Hi Susan, as far as I’m aware, no. I’ll do some more research and if I find anything different, I’ll get back to you.

    • Hi Richelle, that’s an interesting question. Officially no, it’s not compatible. However, I have known people to use the Ekobrew successfully in the B30. I think it’s not a 100% perfect fit, but it seems to fit enough to work for some people, and not well for others. Perhaps your best bet is to try one in your own machine and see?

  • On the view the deal page you have a link for compatible machines that includes Cuisinart SS-780PC, but above you do not have this machine listed. Can you please clarify if it is compatible or not??

    • Hi, yes, I can confirm that the Cuisinart SS780PC is definitely compatible with the Ekobrew. Thanks for visiting!

    • Hi Pam, I haven’t ever tried this, but I would guess not. The coffee machine is designed to push water through the Ekobrew at high pressure, to extract the full flavour from the coffee. I think you’d get a pretty weak cup of coffee without a machine I’m afraid.

  • My wife loves her tea’s can you tell me if this can be used for tea’s and hot chocolates as well?

    Thank you

    • Absolutely! In fact, I know people who have bought Ekobrews and use them ONLY for tea! It can also make hot chocolate, but to be honest, I don’t believe hot chocolate needs to be brewed as such, so I think a coffee maker is over-kill when you can just pour hot water over the powder – but, to each their own, and perhaps it does taste better! So yes, definitely, is the answer to your question. Thanks for stopping by!

  • I have an Illy machine and am wondering if this compatible? I stopped using my coffee maker because I could not get over the fact that I was throwing those plastic pods into the garbage and there was no way to recycle them. So there it sits getting dust and I am so glad to see there is an alternative.

  • Why can’t you ship to Hawaii? Its a bummers to see this deal, then not applicable to the beautiful 50th state. U.S.A

    • Hi Lana, I’m sorry, I’m an independent review site – I focus on ‘green’ issues. I have nothing to do with the shipping of any product from Groupon. (I live on a tiny tropical island – very little is able to be shipped to me, so I understand exactly how frustrated you’re feeling). Perhaps you need to contact Groupon about this? Thanks for your comment, and Hawaii is indeed beautiful!

    • As far as I know, no, because it’s such a totally different system. I’m not directly associated with Ekobrew, so they may have plans I’m not aware of, but certainly there are no public plans to develop for the VUE. I’m sure that wasn’t the answer you were hoping for, but I hope it helps!

  • i was reading an article about coffee that is not brewed thru a filter (french press, etc) due to the oils not being filtered, can raise cholesterol levels. my concern is this the ecobrew does not use a paper filter like the k-cup should be be concerned about this issue?

    • Hi Sara, my expertise is working out if a product is eco friendly or not, rather than it’s chemical composition and effect on the human body. I can say that roasting coffee beans does indeed generate a small quantity of oil, some of which may be absorbed by a paper filter. Coffee experts generally prefer coffee with that small amount of oil as it adds flavour (as it does with food). Most of the oil is probably present during the original roasting of the beans, rather than in the quick heating they get in a home coffee machine. If you drink a lot of coffee, the oil might lead to cholesterol problems, but I’m not a doctor or scientist. My personal guess is that in moderation it’s probably fine. I’d guess that if you ate a doughnut or creamy cake with the coffee, there would be a bigger risk of cholesterol from that, than from the coffee oil. I hope this helps, and thanks for your comment!

  • thank you claire for your quick response. you are right about the foods we choose to have with our cup of coffee are probably more of a concern.

  • I’ve never been this happy to find such an interesting post. I’m really a coffee lover. This is so helpful. I’m gonna try some ideas of yours. Yet it’s a bit pricey but sure thing I like this!
