I love scientific names, do you? The latest one I’ve learnt is “splatometer“.  It’s a scientific study of the number of insects splattered by cars as they drive.  Good name! However, the tests show the decrease in insect life is so shocking it’s being called an “insect apocalypse”. Now personally, I’ll be very happy if I never see another spider again. But seriously though, insects sustain food – and therefore us humans and all life on Earth. Habitat destruction, pesticides and of course climate change are the main killers. It’s a real problem.

Psychologists studying this in the US have found several reasons, including that men are constantly worrying they will lose their “manly” status, and therefore feel the need to prove it at every opportunity. Meat-eating is apparently viewed as manly, but salads are not. Women are also generally more compassionate, including towards animals. For more info click here.

decision of unconventional fossil fuelsDid you know that when rats are stressed, they make bad choices? In experiments, they’re given a choice between a large reward or treat, and a tiny one. Normally, they choose the larger reward immediately. But under stress, they may ignore the reward, or choose the tiny one – and then not seem to enjoy it. What’s more, even after the stress is removed, they’re affected for at least another full day afterwards. Apparently, it’s a similar situation for us humans. Yikes! Bad decisions can have a serious impact on our lives.

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is the world’s richest man. He’s been criticized for not donating much. Now, he has pledged $10 billion to help fight climate change. Hooray! He’s worth around $130 billion, so this donation is about 8% of his fortune.  He’s also been criticized by his employees for Amazon’s carbon footprint – I’ve reported before about staff being fired for speaking out. This will help. He says “Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet” – he’s right!

Do you use Amazon’s Echo or Alexa or a similar product? If you do, did you know that Amazon keeps data on what you tell it to do, as well as your voice recordings? Of course, Amazon is not the only company tracking your activities, but it does seem to have taken it to a whole new level. If you want to know more, there’s a fascinating article – it’s long but scary – here.
