Environment News – “Freedom Gas” / Do Climate Marches Help? / Emissions Status
Some bite-sized pieces of news from the environment this week.

Oh good grief! Think you know all about natural gas? Think again. In a new press release, the Trump administration has re-branded natural gas with a new, patriotic-sounding name: “freedom gas”. They want to export the fracked U.S. fossil fuel “spreading freedom gas throughout the world.” Just like “clean coal” (that clogs our lungs and causes the climate crisis) and “ethical oil” (which also pollutes and causes the climate crisis), these are all ways to fool people into thinking it’s OK to use fossil fuels (and keep the profits coming). Pathetic.
It’s an interesting phenomenon about protest marches. They can backfire. Animal rights activists who threw blood on fur coats found themselves viewed as “hostile” and “militant” in the US. So what about the recent wave of marches for the climate, including the schoolkids’ marches? Well, a new study from Penn State shows that climate marches tend to be viewed more positively, with even Republicans feeling that climate change can be tackled if everyone works together.
Our carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have increased AGAIN for the 7th year, according to readings from the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii. They’ve increased steeply, reflecting our continuing use of fossil fuels – we reached over 414 ppm (parts per million) in May. Scientists warn that concentrations of more than 450 ppm risk triggering extreme weather events and temperature rises, pushing the climate crisis to become catastrophic and irreversible.
