Some bite-sized pieces of news from the environment this week.

A little briefer this week  (I’m still recuperating) but these will still keep you up-to-date with what’s happening.

  • It couldn’t have been more ironic. Minutes after Venice’s regional council rejected measures to fund renewable energy and replace polluting diesel buses with cleaner ones, the council’s chamber was swept by floodwaters. You’ve seen it on the news – Venice was flooded. Priceless architecture, frescoes and other treasures.are under threat – all over the world, not just in Venice – from the climate crisis.
  • Would you consider fostering a dog for the holidays? It’s a great idea! You commit to brining a dog  home for a short period of time. To quote one organizer:- “The dogs benefit because they get a break from the stressful shelter, they get lots of love and affection, and they get exposed to lots of potential adopters (their host’s friends and family members).  Hosts benefit because the dog brings love and light into their home. They get to experience the joy of having an animal, especially a shelter dog who is so appreciative of everything.”. Sometimes the dogs are adopted, but if not, shelter staff get a break, and valuable feedback on dogs’ personalities. It really is a a win-win. Ask your local shelter now.

  • Deforestation is rapidly in the Brazilian Amazon -equivalent to about two football fields a MINUTE. Environmental groups blame the government for weakening environmental protections, supporting loggers and encouraging land-grabbing.
  • Greta Thunberg has refused an environmental prize, saying the climate movement needs people in power to start to listen to science, not awards.
  • A new study is very specific about what the world needs to do to help prevent the worst effects of climate change. Oil companies including ExxonMobil, BP, and Shell need to cut the total amount of oil and gas they produce every day by 35 percent. Global governments also need to stop issuing new oil and gas licenses for fossil fuel exploration.
  • Emirates is the biggest long-haul airline in the world, and it’s done little to help avert climate change. But now its president says he will do more, he accepts the “stark reality” of the climate crisis. He credits Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion for his change. Let’s hope other airlines follow suit!
