oil pipelineRemember Keystone XL? Work has started again on the pipeline, and officials will ensure it goes ahead using “any means” to stop protesters, including treating them as “terrorists”. People are right to be concerned – just last month the existing Keystone pipeline, which follows a similar route, leaked 383,000 gallons of tar sands into North Dakota wetlands. The pipeline will cut through tribal lands and cause environmental damage. But powerful people want it to go ahead.

Pesticides in produce - fresh fruit and vegShoppers buying longer-lasting bags may be getting it wrong, according to a new study. Reusable plastic shopping bags avoid single-use bags, which is good, but the sturdier bags use more plastic. And the real problem is that shoppers have an average of 54 reusable bags per household. That’s an astonishing number. Why so many? There are calls to increase the price, to discourage buying new instead of re-using.

We know that ExxonMobil were aware of the danger of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels even as they undermined the work of scientists. Now we know that Big Coal also knew – thanks to the accidental discovery of an industry journal published in 1966. It was blunt, saying that CO2 was rapidly increasing due to fossil fuels, and predicting temperature rises and “vast changes in the climates of the earth”.  They were spot on – and covered it up.
