Find Fresh, Healthy Food at Local Farmers Markets!
We know that locally-grown healthy food, is great from an eco-friendly point of view because
- there’s little or no transportation involved (which helps the environment),
- often the food grown locally is in smaller quantities without the use of so many chemicals (which helps the environment)
- often you can buy organic food, which is grown completely without artificial fertilizers and pesticides (which helps the environment)
- and you get to eat fresh, healthy, chemical-free food (which is great for your health!).
Be aware that sometimes (not always), you may pay a higher price for locally grown food. However, as my readers have said, there’s less wastes less due to better quality which makes it more affordable, and supporting local growers helps in today’s economy, as well as being eco-friendly.

If you live in the USA, it’s easy to find sources of local food if you know where to look. Scour your area for local farmers markets, community-supported agriculture groups (CSAs), free-range meat, local dairies and more with these resources:
LocalHarvest – This great resource site lets you search for local farmers markets, co-ops, CSAs and restaurants in your specific area.
EatWild – This site gives a listing of grass-fed meat and dairy products throughout the USA and Canada. They also list farmers who will ship products to you.
Real Milk – What is real milk? Milk produced from humane, non-toxic, pasture-based dairying and small-scale traditional processing. This site lists resources in the US by State, and shows why real milk is healthy.

Clare, as Sonya says the quality is far better with chemical-free food. A farmers’ market has very fresh food which is surely more healthy for you. People get thrown off by organic, if they called it pesticide free I bet they would sell more.
That’s a very interesting concept Kevin! So some people aren’t too sure what “organic” is about, but pesticide-free is much more obvious? Thank you, I hadn’t thought of that!
We have a farmers market here in Pahrump every Saturday from 7am – 11am. Its a great place to pick up some great foods!

They just started an organic farmers’ market in my small town. I’ve been going to the three markets in the neighboring town, but because I want to support our town’s market, I make it a point to shop there.

Absolutely we vote with our dollars! And I like to support local initiatives, when they’re genuinely eco-friendly it’s a win-win for the producer, the buyer and the environment!
Farmers markets are not easy to find in the city….but we are starting to look for one…
