Go Green AND Lose Weight!

Don’t Diet.  Go Green and Boost Your Metabolism Instead!

Some of us would also quite like to lose a pound or two.

So I love it when I can write about ways that can achieve both of those objectives – oh, and this method will also save you a lot of money!

This is a win-win-win scenario.

Let me show you how easy it is.

Long Ago….

Before we got ‘civilised’ and changed our lives with all our modern conveniences, the seasons had much more of an effect on us.

In Winter our ancestors felt the cold.  Our bodies had to work harder to keep us warm, and so we ate more heartily – stews, root vegetables and so on.

In Summer we felt the heat.  We tended to eat less because we expended less energy.  Conveniently, salads and cold meals were easy to make from the harvests.

Now…..

Now, we’ve changed things.

In Winter, it’s still cold outside, but we turn the heat up in our homes and offices, and have clothes which offer better cold protection, and drive cars with heaters.  We don’t suffer through winters the way our ancestors did.

summer metabolismIn summer, we don’t get hot because we use air conditioners and fans in our homes, offices and cars to keep us cool.

And that makes life much more comfortable!

However, several studies (including a 2006 study in the International Journal of Obesity) show that temperature has a big impact on fat loss.

Here’s how the average temperature inside American homes has changed:

Year Avg Home Temp Winter
1923 64 F     /    18 C
1986 76 F     /    24 C

Because we’re now much warmer in winter and cooler in summer than we used to be, it’s likely to have a big impact on our metabolism.

What can we do?

seasonal dressing is greenBy making small changes to the temperatures in our homes, we could provide a boost to our metabolism which could be a very easy way of losing a few pounds – and it sounds a lot easier to me than a diet!

Dress appropriately for the seasons and make it easy on yourself (in winter, snuggle into that gorgeous sweater you bought last year to wear around the house!)

Plus, you’ll save a PILE of money on your energy bills, AND you’ll burn less fossil fuels to heat and cool your home!

The following temperatures are recommended:

Winter Summer
64 – 66 F      /     18 – 19 C Open the windows!
If humid, use aircon at  78 F     /     26 C

Impact your metabolism, save money, and reduce your carbon footprint  – what’s not to love?
