A round-up of this week’s environmental, green and ecofriendly news and updates.

family Christmas - help a shelterIt’s bad enough when dogs end up in shelters – they may or may not get adopted, they may or may not be euthanized. But it’s even worse when a dog in a shelter is adopted – and then returned. Apparently, the most common reason is because the new owner chose a dog that wasn’t suited to their needs. It’s a problem that’s common across the world – but a 13-year-old from Texas is helping to solve it!

She has created a new website which asks prospective adopters 13 questions, including whether they have children, what they will do for their new dog, and so on. The computer then suggests suitable dogs available for adoption – it’s currently linked to her local shelter, but she plans to expand this.  It’s blunt – a certain score results in “How about a cat instead?”. But so far, it seems to be working (fewer dogs returned). Sometimes it takes a youngster to teach us new tricks!

Busy life needs the slow movementWe all know we need to keep moving and get some exercise – but what happens when you’ve got a really busy schedule?

How can you manage to fit in some exercise?

Luckily, it’s easier than you think.

Here are some great ideas that you can fit neatly into your day – you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of some of them before!  Get the useful I’m-too-busy-to-exercise tips here!

Of course you use reusable bags – but had you thought about reusable thermal bags?

They’re green and eco-friendly, and there are some good advantages to using them – as you’ll see in this guest post.

Green News:

eco-friendly wind turbineBritain’s wind farms provided more electricity than its eight nuclear power stations in the first three months of 2018, marking the first time wind has overtaken nuclear across a quarter. (At the end of 2017, wind together with solar supplied more power than nuclear – this was the first time wind has managed the feat alone). That’s great news for a renewable energy future!

With plastic waste such a huge problem in our oceans, it’s good to know that some manufacturers are upcycling some of it to make new products. For example:

  • Adidas make a plastic running shoe from waste collected from beaches
  • Sea2See sunglasses are made from abandoned fishing nets (which could otherwise entangle and kill marine life)
  • Bureo skateboards also use recycled fishing nets to make their boards
  • Method soap is sold in bottles made from recovered ocean plastic

Note that these companies don’t necessarily make ALL of their products from recycled plastic, but  it’s good to know they are doing their bit for the environment!
