Green, Environment News 11 January 2017

A round-up of this week’s environmental, green and ecofriendly news and updates.

If you watched the wonderful film Blackfish, you’ll have heard of Tilikum the orca (killer whale).

He was a star of Seaworld’s orca shows, and despite being too big for his holding tank and obviously desperately unhappy, he was kept in captivity from when he was caught in the wild at age 2 until his death on January 6th, aged 36.

He was responsible for human deaths – but he was a crowd-pleaser and he bred really well. So Seaworld kept him. He was diagnosed with an incurable lung disease last March, and was apparently in constant pain. But Seaworld didn’t euthanase him to relieve his pain.

An unhappy death was his only escape from the misery of his Seaworld prison.

#RIPTilikum.

turmeric benefitsI knew that turmeric was a pretty powerful spice – but it’s got even more benefits that I realized when I started researching it.

See the benefits – and find some interesting ways of adding it to your normal food. And (of course) there are useful EcoExpert tips too. Read the article here.

A wonderful new website called Treepedia has been launched. It explores the benefits of the urban trees found in 12 different major cities across the globe – Boston, Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Paris, Los Angeles, London, Geneva, Sacramento, Tel-Aviv and Turin.

To find out more about the city you live in or near, and the trees within your community, take a look at Treepedia now.

The winter blues. We all get them – and it doesn’t actually have to be winter! (Right now, I’m sweltering down here in the summer heat!).

Here are 10 fun – and of course green and ecofriendly – things to do to get over the winter blues. Read the post now and I challenge you to do at least one of the things, today!

solar energy on exsting roofChina is trying hard to move away from dirty coal and into clean renewables. The country will create an astonishing 13 million new clean energy jobs by 2020. That’s a lot of good jobs, and it’s great for the environment too, as well as lessening coal pollution.

Meanwhile in the US, the good news is that New York will close its aging Indian Point nuclear power station by 2021. It’s dangerously close to 20 million people, it has often leaked radioactive waste, and sits near an active fault line.

Of course, the power must then come from somewhere else. Instead of choosing coal or natural gas, renewable energy (mostly hydro power) will be brought in from Canada. At the same time, the state will also set up programs to reduce energy demand by compensating consumers for lowering their usage at peak times. New York also plans a massive offshore wind farm.

  • I went to Sea World once. It was like a zoo and I hated it. I don’t care for animals kept in small spaces. These people think they are doing a good thing. I often hope they spend their next life in confinement. I have often wondered how to use the turmeric. Now I know. Thank you. I don’t think they are closing down that nuclear plant soon enough. Glad they are doing it though. Lots of good information here. I have a full spectrum light on right now. It does help. My city gets very little sunshine in the winter and now that we have some, it’s too cold to go outside unless you are 10. 🙂 Hope you are having a good new year.

    • I’ve never truly understood the “education” justification given for zoos. I don’t grasp what children “learn” by seeing animals behind bars and in small cages. Surely it’s more educational to watch a thrilling wildlife documentary showing them running free? I’ve never been to Sea World and don’t intend to. I know I would – like you – hate it. I’m glad the turmeric article was useful. “Too cold… unless you are 10” – I love it Marlene! I’m glad the light helps, I think they’re a fabulous idea. My year has started off very well, and I hope yours has too, thanks so much for stopping by!
