A round-up of this week’s environmental, green and ecofriendly news and updates.

food waste in america bought in plastic bags then discardedMaking us pay for plastic bags has really worked in so many places around the world. There was so much opposition (from the plastics industry and consumers alike). But here’s a wonderful statistic: in the 6 months since a charge for single-use, disposable bags was introduced in England, 6 billion fewer bags were handed out.

Isn’t that astonishing? England is quite highly populated, but it’s still a small country. And yet – 6 billion fewer bags in just 6 months! Plus, the bag charge meant that deserving charities received almost £30 million! People who do beach clean-ups report that they’re not seeing plastic bags on English beaches any more – and that’s a HUGE win for the environment.

It’s proof that we CAN change consumer behaviour in large numbers. Perhaps next we can charge for all those nasty single-use coffee cups…..

getting fitHave you ever worked hard at getting fit, but not been able to see results?

It can be discouraging. So here are 6 not-so-obvious ways to tell that your hard work is paying off.

Oil contaminates everything

Another oil leak – this time off the coast of Scotland from an oil rig in the North Sea. The oil is being left to disperse (be carried away by currents) – presumably this is cheaper and easier than trying to collect it. It’s an area rich in fish and seabirds.

And BigOil continues to say that drilling for oil is safe….

working to solve climate changeThere’s a rather odd connection between climate change and – all things – holes.

Read the latest update here.

elderly-woman-hunched-age-old-walk-via-pinterest-agingDid you have elderly relatives who said “I can feel it in my bones” when bad weather was coming? I did.

It seems they’ve been proved right – some people are sensitive to changes in barometric pressure when a storm approaches.

Here are recorded changes:

  • Blood pressure dropping, sometimes leading to dizziness
  • Headaches or migraines due to a pressure difference
  • Joint pain
  • Diabetics may struggle to maintain blood sugar levels during a cold front

I love finding out new ways that we’re connected to Nature!
