Green, Environment News 19 October 2016

A round-up of this week’s environmental, green and ecofriendly news and updates.

elephant poachingYou’ve read of course about the terrible poaching of animals in Africa, particularly of elephant and rhino for their horns.

Poachers are difficult to catch as the areas are vast.

But now specially trained dogs (often German Shepherds) now skydive out of helicopters with their handlers and quickly start tracking poachers.  You can see a great video of them in action here on my Facebook page

halloween pumpkin candleHalloween is a fun festival – but it’s mostly lousy for the environment.

TPP could increase PollutionJobs, the economy, etc. won’t matter at all if climate change gets out of hand and we swelter or get flooded, experience food shortages as crops are ruined, and see global water crises. Climate refugees / migrants will make the current refugee situation look like nothing at all.

With the world watching the US Presidential race with interest, some reporters have noticed some interesting statistics:

  • Political discussion of energy still revolves mainly around how to produce more of it rather than how to produce it without burning up the planet.
  • A mere five minutes were spent on climate change and other environmental issues in the first two presidential debates.

It’s a crucial, critical issue and yet it hardly gets a mention.

Meanwhile, brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking believes we need to boost space travel as Earth will become uninhabitable in the next 100 years or so.

Natural Allergy Solutions - tomatoes

A unique farm in the South Australian desert grows 180,000 tomato plants – with no soil, no pesticides, no fossil fuels, and no groundwater.  Wow!

Seawater is piped to the desert and desalinated using solar energy. The water is then used to irrigate tomato plants grown in coconut husks instead of soil, kept in a network of greenhouses.

It’s amazing what we can do WITHOUT fossil fuels if we really try!

  • Some very good ideas here. We keep waiting for a kind and ideal world but it seems we have such a long way to go. I still have a hard time with animal abuse as well as the abuse of women and children. If we can get there, the rest of it should come naturally. Maybe then we will realize our mother earth should not be abused also.

    • You’re so right Marlene – there is so much cruelty in the world that it really is no surprise that we abuse the planet as well. I hadn’t really thought of it that way before. I agree – when we’re nice to each other, and particularly when we are kind to those less strong than us, everything else will fall into place. Thanks for that thought!
