October 2015 was the warmest October ever recorded – and the sixth straight month to set record temperatures. It also was the first month to surpass the average temperature by more than 1 degree Celsius or about 1.87 degrees Fahrenheit, new NASA data revealed this week.

By the time you see this woman’s portrait, she’ll have melted away. A New York-based artist created his hyper-realistic portrait of a woman on an iceberg “to ignite a sense of urgency” about melting glaciers and climate change.

green news 11 18 2015 kikkomanDo you use Kikkoman soy sauce? I do, so I was horrified to find out that they use cruel animal testing to back up their products’ health claims. (Ironic, as it’s often used as a vegetarian ingredient). However, PETA announced this week that Kikkoman have stopped all animal testing. Good.

Pit bull dogs have a bad reputation. Often, it’s not the dogs’ fault, but the people who “own” them. Some 2016 calendars want to change the bad image with photos of the dogs looking completely different. And the calendars will benefit pit bull rescue groups and advocacy organizations.

A baby product company, Munchkin Inc., has pledged $1 million to kickstart an ocean sanctuary where captive whales can be safely released. They wanted Seaworld to release Tilikum – the whale at the centre of the 2013 documentary “Blackfish” – to the sanctuary once it’s complete. Tilikum, who killed a trainer in 2010, rarely appears in public and is reportedly living in a very small tank in Orlando and being used for breeding purposes.  Sadly, Seaworld doesn’t seem interested.

Still on the subject of Seaworld, a 2-year-old beluga whale died in its San Antonio park – there have been at least 58 beluga deaths. They live to about 50 in the wild. There are renewed calls for an end to Seaworld’s breeding programs.

Green News 11 18 2015 Bill NyePerhaps it had to happen eventually. Bill Nye The Science Guy has become Bill Nye The Fashion Guy. The famous scientist is teaming up with Nicholas Graham, the creator and designer of Joe Boxer, for a bow tie line that’s inspired by — what else? — science. Some bow ties are printed with the logo of the Planetary Society, for which Nye serves as CEO. Others sport a checked pattern resembling the periodic table.  Currently Nye is also promoting his new book on climate change, “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World”.

Environmental campaigners are launching a last-ditch legal attempt to prevent Japan from slaughtering whales in the Antarctic this winter, after Tokyo indicated it would ignore a ban on its “scientific” expeditions.

The huge climate march that was planned for COP21, the climate summit in Paris next month, is in doubt due to security concerns. The conference will go ahead but so far there is no agreement on the march.
