Chinese Man Gives Fortune to Save Dogs – Green News 12 02 2015

The most wonderful story has just come out of China.  As you probably know, they have a huge problem with stray dogs there, and dogs are often eaten as food after being killed in less-than-humane ways.

Well, a Chinese man lost his dog, and while he was searching, he entered a slaughterhouse and saw conditions that horrified him.

He had made quite a bit of money from his work in the steel industry. Not only did he buy the slaughterhouse, but he also established a shelter for stray dogs. Yan has now saved the lives of over 2,000 canines, and many of his dogs have found forever homes.

However, Yan’s immense generosity and compassion has come with a price. Once a wealthy man, he has now gone into debt for his dogs.

Yet amazingly, he refuses donations.

“I do not accept monetary donations,” he said. “I only hope that kind-hearted people will be able to donate a few supplies to help”.

You can see photos and read more details here.  How wonderful that he would give up his fortune to help dogs!

Who Creates Climate Change?  – Green News 12 02 2015

Massive environment impact of a new dam - green news 12 02 2015

The richest 10% of people produce half (50%) of Earth’s climate-harming fossil-fuel emissions, while the poorest half contribute a mere 10%, British charity Oxfam said in a report released Wednesday.

Now, you and me and all the people who care about the planet are doing our best to reduce our carbon footprint.

But apparently the spending on Black Friday and Cyber Monday – already huge – increased again this year, although more people shopped from home rather than going in-store. With sales figures in the billions (yes, billions), you have to wonder if people realize the connection between buying more “stuff” and climate change.

And in the meantime, the future of our planet may be decided at the UN climate conference in Paris (COP21).  It’s difficult to get countries to agree, but we all have to work together to save the Earth. There’s no point in a growth economy if the planet isn’t liveable.

Africa Goes Fracking Mad –  – Green News 12 02 2015

Many of my readers know and love the many nature and wildlife reserves in Africa. I was horrified to read that the Botswana government has sold fracking rights in their huge Kgalagadi transfrontier park, one of Africa’s largest conservation areas. Read more here.

Live Goat Becomes Friend not Food of Tiger – Green News 12 02 2015

In an astonishing story, a live goat that was offered to a tiger in a zoo as food (animals would be alive in the wild and that’s how predators hunt them), became friends instead. Now the two are inseparable (pics here).

Zoos can be pretty horrible places for animals (I’ve never been sure how “educational” it is to show children animals behind bars – nature documentaries are surely more informative), so I’m pleased they each have company now.

More next week. Please share this weekly green news round-up – buttons below and right – thank you!
