Bulk Food Means Green Groceries

Buy Organic Food at Great Prices – This Week Only!!

green groceries with national bulk weekSo many people say to me that they’d love to buy organic food, but it’s too expensive. Well, today, I have the solution for you!

Here’s how to get organic food and save money too – wow!

October 12-18 is National Bulk Food Week 2014 across the US – that means that you can save money on groceries, and especially organic food!  Participating grocery stores are celebrating the eco-friendly and affordable benefits of buying in bulk, by offering special incentives and discounts to shoppers in the bulk food aisles.

Even if it’s not Bulk Food Week when you read this, you can still benefit from bulk buying.

According to the Bulk is Green (BIG) Council, the benefits of bulk buying include

  • Saving money—Organic bulk food is on average, a massive 89% cheaper than packaged organic food – isn’t that amazing!
  • Helping the environment—Eliminating packaging reduces a product’s—and your—carbon footprint. Bulk foods cut down on the amount of garbage going into landfills, streamline the transportation needed to deliver goods to market and help reduce carbon emissions.
  • Reducing waste—Buying in bulk enables you to purchase only the specific amounts of foods you need or want, instead of a packaged weight determined by the manufacturer.
  • Buy “a pinch or a pound” – Buying in bulk offers a broad selection of natural and organic products that can be purchased in the exact quantity desired. If you need a large quantity of nuts for a holiday party or just a pinch of curry powder for a new recipe, bulk foods provide both options.

Other Tips for Bulk Buying

BIG also offers the following tips for commemorating the week:

  1. Invite friends, family and neighbours over for a potluck and ask that they only bring snacks purchased in – or dishes made from foods purchased in – the bulk foods aisle.  (The video below shows how to prepare an entire meal made with ingredients solely from the bulk foods aisle).
  2. Make home-made nutritious snacks – granolas or trail mixes are healthy snacks that can be made ahead using bulk ingredients that require no cooking. In addition, they travel well and are a perfect snack to pack in a child’s lunch box or office desk drawer.
  3. Green your pantry by investing in glass storage containers, stainless steel jars or reusing mason jars to store bulk foods.   Not only will this reduce the carbon footprint by eliminating the extra packaging that comes with pre-packaged foods, but your pantry will look and feel well-organised.

Try It!

Expand your palate, with a recipe such as couscous with seasonal vegetables, or quinoa with black beans. Sprinkle one of nature’s popular super foods, chia seed, which also can be found in bulk, on top of your nutritious meal. The bulk section is a great place to be creative and experiment.

Bonus Tip:  One thing BIG don’t seem to focus on is whether ALL the items in the bulk food aisles are organic.  Always check the labels and make sure you’re buying the best, most healthy food for you and your family.

  • This is great info. It drives me crazy when people say they can’t afford to buy organic. I guess their health isn’t that important to them. I don’t understand how anyone could afford NOT to buy organic. So give up Starbucks for a couple of days to make up the difference! It’s really not that much more.

  • I initially had the what reaction “it’s too expensive” when I first saw the organic prices but then I thought about what value I placed on my health and it became pretty easy to adjust.

  • I had no idea there was a National Bulk Food Week. It seems like to me that there used to be a lot more bulk food available at grocery stores 10 years ago than there is now. I think this is a great idea.

  • In Sunny Costa Rica, I have fallen in to this habit by accident…by going shopping with the neighbors…cheaper to share a cab, etc….and then just naturally saying, oh look this is on sale and we could split it 3 ways!
I love to see that there is a National Bulk Fook Week…

  • According to the list of stores participating, there does not appear to be one near me. Regardless, I will definitely begin shopping in the bulk foods aisle of my store.

    Thanks for this post.

  • That was very interesting to see! Of course that if you buy in a supermarket and pay more you will probably get “more” stuff but not necesseraly more of what you need…and usually buying with jars means trhowing a lot of food at the end of the year…

This is AWESOME and again, something I was not aware of until you brought it up! Thank you, I will get in touch with some people and see who needs what and we can buy in bulk and split up the goodies.

  • Bulk buying was a craze here in Oz many years ago . Haven’t heard the term for a long time , more people going to farmer market type places , but only buying for themselves .
