Green Halloween Party

Here’s How to Green Your Halloween Party and Treats

Now that I’ve covered how to green your Halloween costumes and face paint, we can move on to the all-important Treats, as well as hosting a green Halloween party.

Green Trick or Treat Bags

Of course you’ll want the kids to show that you’re green.  So don’t give them plastic bags to collect their treats.  Re-use old, worn pillowcases.  Make it a project – decorate pillowcases or old canvas shopping bags with Halloween symbols.  The kids will love it!

If you don’t have anything suitable at home, you can see a range of eco-friendly Halloween bags on Amazon here. Also, these Burlap Drawstring Bags burlap drawstring bags eco halloween christmas etc are perfect and can be re-used for fresh produce afterwards.  They are made from 100% organic jute / burlap, and they can be recycled after use.

Or buy Halloween themed bags and re-use them each year.

What To Give As Treats

The greenest option is to bake at home – have fun and personalize the cookies!  You’ll know exactly what the kids will be eating, and you’ll save money.

Many kids are told not to accept unwrapped sweets for safety reasons, so wrap your goodies in eco-friendly paper.

If you’re buying candy in a store, look for items wrapped in paper (not plastic) and sold in bulk so that you reduce the packaging waste and save money.

Consider gifts other than candy, such as small toys, games or pencils.

Green Halloween Party

An at-home Halloween party will let you save energy if you live in a spread-out neighborhood where trick-or-treating would require a car.

So, dim the lights,  and set out some soy candles with Fall scents (soy doesn’t pollute the air and isn’t made from petroleum like most candles).

Get the youngsters bobbing for apples (organic and local of course!), making crafts from recycled paper, and telling their favourite ghost stories.

Use nature-inspired décor – Halloween is a harvest festival after all!

So buy organic, local fresh produce and decorate with it, as well as leaves and small shrubs.

The food can be eaten later or composted, the leaves can be composted, and the shrubs will continue to grow.

If you’re going to have a Halloween party, avoid disposable napkins, plates, cups, tablecloths and décor.  It will look much nicer, you’ll easily have a full load for your dishwasher and washing machine, and you won’t add to landfill.

Walk or Drive?

Walk from house to house instead of driving. But kids will need a torch so they can be seen.

For a green Halloween flashlight, it should be LED and/or hand-cranked.  (After all, the kids will be on a sugar high, so they’ll have loads of energy!). Check them out here.

If you do need to drive to some places for trick and treat, don’t leave your car engine to idle, switch off the engine unless you’ll only be stopped for 30 seconds or less.

  • Clare, these are all greta ideas for making Halloween more ecofriendly.

    Now go implement!

  • The number of parents who drive their kids door to door is completely insan in our neighborhood. With so many kids our walking the streets, Halloween is the last night I want to be driving. Yet it is like a traffice jam with all the cars going door to door.

  • Halloween should be eco friendly. I always think of how Halloween as something 200 years ago like the headless horseman I guess. A Halloween Party is always fun. Green seems like the perfect color addition to Orange for Halloween.

  • I remember growing up one of my neighbors always made popcorn balls. They were delicious and always a real treat. It’s unfortunate that in today’s society we can’t do things like that anymore.

Your suggestions for going green are great ones.

  • Clare ~

Good tips for a Green Halloween … When I was a kid, I remember walking around the neighborhood, trick-or-treating using my pillow case. I don’t know why people would drive around on Halloween, it’s already dangerous enough with all the little kids around and still to add pollution to the environment ……

Stay Amazing and Do Great Things, Neil

  • Like Neil, I too remember using those old pillowcases!! They could hold a LOT of candy and they were stronger than plastic!!! You are bringing back a lot of good memories for me!!!

  • Old, worn pillowcases sre the best to use for Holloween because they do not stretch from the weight of the candy. Yum.

  • Hi Green Goddess,

I like your Green Ecofriendly Halloween Party tips. Yes, walking house to house on Halloween night is best so that you get all the great free and easy exercise. If you’re going to be eating Halloween treats at least all of that walking will help to offset the calories you consume!

When I was a little girl, one household with an older couple (you how anyone over 40 seems “old” to kids, I don’t know if they were over 50 or over 60, but I think they were a senior mature couple. If memory serves me correctly they had grey or white hair.) served fresh apple cider from Terhune Orchards, a local commercial consumer apple orchard. Because we were acquainted with the couple, my parents felt it was safe for us to drink the apple cider they served.
