Green Halloween Pumpkin

Make it Special with a Green Halloween Pumpkin!

Buying a Halloween Pumpkin

If you don’t grow your own pumpkin, be sure to buy either a:

  • Re-usable Halloween pumpkin that you will keep and re-use for multiple festivals – not plastic but perhaps ceramic (plastic is bad for the environment and also the plastic ones look a bit, well, tacky in my opinion)
  • Fresh pumpkin (ideally from your local Farmers’ Market), ideally organic (so there are no pesticides involved), and ideally grown locally (so you don’t have carbon emissions from transport – but of course this requires you to live in area where the climate is suitable for growing pumpkins!)

Use all the Halloween Pumpkin!

  1. Dig out the pumpkin seeds, rinse and dry them, shake them onto a greased baking sheet, spray a little oil, sprinkle with salt, and bake at 350 F (180c) for 15 – 20 minutes.  You get a great Fall pumpkin snack!
  2. Make pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin ravioli or pumpkin soup (I like my soup with garam masala spice added for extra warmth).  Add other roasted root veggies such as parsnips, sweet potatoes and turnips.
  3. Finally, chop up the shell into smallish pieces and compost it, together with any leftover candy sweets and other harvest vegetables.

And don’t forget…….

Be Happy!

Whichever green options you and your family take advantage of, you’ll feel better on November 1 knowing you helped combat the holiday’s terrifying eco-damage.

  • Here is a use for Halloween beverage recyclables….I have a friend who makes and sells handbags in Costa Rica. She uses the poptops on soda or beer cans for the handbag chain….we are all having all of our friends save these for her….it is so nice to be able to recycle something into a useable product!!!

  • Halloween is a great time to prove you are eco friendly. These are great Halloween ideas to go green. I actually snack on pumpkin seeds so a great Halloween tip there as well.

  • Clare ~

These are great tips for using a pumpkin completely. I do have a reusable pumpkin and like to go around the neighborhood the week before Halloween and let the neighbors know that I’d be happy to take their “inners” … pumpkin seeds are such a good and healthy snack!
