Healthy Teeth – Without the Toxic Chemicals

Naturally Healthy Teeth – Smile Beautifully Without the Chemical Nasties

Healthy Teeth - naturallyWe all want nice bright, white, healthy teeth.

But if you want to reduce the amount of toxins in your life, then you need to also consider your toothpaste.

Toothpaste is great, and brushing and flossing is a time-honoured way of keeping healthy teeth.

However, most toothpaste contains sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate  (SLS) – the same chemical used in soaps and shampoos and anything that ‘needs’ to lather.

So, what can you do?

There are two main routes towards healthy teeth which don’t involve harmful chemicals:

  • Seek out and use commercially available toothpastes which don’t contain SLS (yes, there are some!), or
  • Make your own toothpaste, so you’re sure it’s chemical free.

In this post, I’m also going to look at Mouthwashes – because it’s lovely to use all-natural, non-toxic mouthwash as well as toothpaste!

Make your Own Toothpaste

The main ingredient in natural, homemade toothpaste is baking soda.

Then you simply need to add some anti-bacterial and anti-fungal ingredients so that brushing your teeth does more than clean them.

I recommend pure neem oil (make sure when you buy it, that it’s pure neem oil with no additives).  Neem is grown all over the little island where I live and we use it for all sorts of remedies.  I also find the neem plant very attractive.  Read more about neem here.

For healthy teeth the all-natural, non-toxic way, here’s how to make your own super-safe toothpaste:-

  1. Mix 2 drops of neem oil or tea tree oil with a tablespoon of baking soda.
  2. Add a drop of peppermint or cinnamon essential oil to improve the taste if you wish.
  3. Shake well to combine.
  4. Dip your toothbrush into this mixture, brush and rinse with water.

Sweeter Toothpaste

If you prefer your homemade toothpaste to taste sweeter, use the above recipe and also add 1/4 teaspoon or less of xylitol.  This sweetener is derived from birch trees, and is often used in sugar-free chewing gum.

Healthy Teeth Also Need Non-Toxic Mouthwash

You can also make your own mouthwash and know exactly what goes into it.   The main ingredient in a homemade mouthwash is cardamom, a spice often used in Indian cuisine and also to flavour coffee.  It contains cineole which is an effective antiseptic.

You will need:

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon crushed cardamom pods
  • 1 tablespoon chopped spearmint leaves

Pour the boiling water over the cardamom and mint to make a ‘tea’.

Use as a mouthwash and store in the refrigerator or very cool place.

Another popular recipe for mouthwash is to add 1 tablespoon crushed cardamom pods and a handful of spearmint leaves to 2 cups of vodka.   Use as a mouthwash as needed.   (I can’t help but feel it’s a bit of a waste of vodka!)

Tip:  Don’t want to mix? For a quick and easy mouthwash with no mixing, chew 2 or 3 cardamom pods, then spit out when finished.

So, for clean, healthy teeth without the chemicals, brush with homemade toothpaste made from baking soda and essential oil.  Use cardamom pods for a natural mouthwash.

Quick, simple, easy ways to detox your life!
