How To Choose the Best Water Filter

Here’s What Most People DON’T Do To Get The BEST Water Filter!

best water filterIf you decide that you don’t want to drink bottled water because it’s so expensive and so harmful to the environment, and you don’t want the hassle of buying and storing the stuff and …..[add your own personal reasons….], but you don’t like the taste or the smell or perhaps the safety of your tap water, then you need to filter your tap water. But how do you know which one is the best water filter?

water filter jugYou have countless choices, from inexpensive pitchers (jugs) to more costly systems that filter the water coming out of every faucet in your house.

No matter which you choose, it’s likely to be less expensive than buying cases of bottled water every year.  The bottled water industry is quick to mention the expense of water filters, but doesn’t compare a filter to the on-going cost of buying bottled water.

Here’s something that less than 1% of filter buyers do.  If you use this trick, you’ll ensure that you’ll get the water you want – the best water filter for you.

First

Do NOT go to a store and buy a filter.

Instead, do a quick bit of research.  Find out what is in the water piped to your home.

(How?  In the US, the EPA issues a water quality report known as a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR).  It is normally published on the internet, and/or in newspapers.  Here is a great resource to help you find the report for your area.   For other countries, your local water utility will be able to help – your water bill will normally have the contact details you need).

Why do you need to do this?

Because no single water filter does everything.

You need to find out what’s in your specific water, so that you know what you need to get rid of.

There’s not much point in buying a fancy filter which gets rids of lead, for example, if there’s no lead in your own tap water!

Once you get the report…

If there are any terms you don’t understand, here’s another site which explains it all.

Now that you know what you need to get rid of, you can search for water filters which are best for your specific requirements!

And again, I’ve got another great resource for you, to help make this search wonderfully easy!

This site lets you specify what you want to filter out, and then gives you a list of all the manufacturers who have filters which meet these criteria, and the specific model numbers.  It’s a really cool resource!  It works for the US, the UK, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand, Taiwan and The Netherlands.

So, for example, I could go to the filter search site and from the list I could choose that I want a filter which will reduce zinc, chlorine and lead, as well as reduce the hardness of my water.

But remember, you might not want to remove everything from your tap water.  Some minerals are beneficial to your health, for example.

You will now be able to choose the best water filter for your specific water!

Most people simply buy a filter without knowing what’s in their water – but now you know how to really make it work for you!

    • Where I live I definitely need a water filter as the water quality is terrible! I can’t get a water report and there’s a very limited supply of filters. I have a very simple carbon filter which removes a lot of the nasties.

  • One of the best articles I’ve read on dealing with what’s in your water. Didn’t know that filters had that much variation. Thanks for the great information!

  • Oh dear, I am so guilty of what you just wrote about.
Time to go to my homework as I am totally curious as to what’s in our water.

  • Thank you, Clare ~

Most people are quick to tell what filter they use – without any real reason why. Thanks to this article, I can do my own research and pick out the best water filter that suits MY needs.

  • Humm … I am one who “just went out and bought a filter – Brita – based entirely on taste. Tap water tasted terrible, the Brita filtered water tasted good. Not the correct way to select I now know.

    • Ah, you should have visited my site earlier! 🙂 However, you bought a filter instead of buying bottled water, and that was DEFINITELY the right thing to do! Thanks Lyle!

  • Great tips! Yes, I also did my research when I decided to have one and you’re right. It’s better to be knowledgeable first than to end up buying what you can’t use. Thanks for a a great article, and for the links too! Cheers!

  • Thanks for this great article! Another thing to consider is how efficient the water filter is. Considering the drought where we live in the southwest, we wanted our water filter to be eco-friendly. After researching many different filters we were shocked to find out that reverse osmosis systems waste a TON of water. We ended up purchasing a LINX Drinking Water System which filters out the nitrates and lead our water had but without all the water waste. We love it – the water tastes amazing and we feel good that we aren’t wasting any water in the process!

    • Yes, I’ve written elsewhere about how much water a RO system uses – not to mention all the sludge that you have to dispose of safely. Glad you’re happy with the system you bought.
