How to Get More Energy as We Age

Aging and How To Get More Energy

how to get more Energy as we age

It’s a consistent theme.

how to get more energy like kidsAs we get older, we seem to have less energy.

I look at kids playing and I wish I had their energy.

(Actually, sometimes I’d happily settle for even half of their energy!)

So, how to get more energy?  Age and fatigue seem synonymous.

Is there a connection?

And is there anything we can do about it?

Absolutely!

A recent Special Report from the Harvard Medical School shows that there are several ways that we can boost our energy levels as we age.

That’s good news!

The report “Boosting Your Energy,” presents a plan to regulate your energy levels at any age. Some of the steps on the plan include:

How to Get More Energy Step #1: Say No!

Say “no” to more obligations. Some of us are stressed because we have too much on our plates.

Learning to say “no” rather than “yes” to every volunteer job, social activity or work project is one of the best ways to restore your energy levels.

How to Get More Energy Step #2: Stress Less

Stress is the most common reason for chronic fatigue.

One way to reduce stress is to follow Step #1 above.

You can also try relaxation techniques such as yoga, tai chi and meditation.

(Friends of mine who practice yoga and/or meditate regularly, are the most relaxed people I know!).

Chat to a trusted friend, or perhaps see a good therapist, but always try other methods before resorting to medication.

How to Get More Energy Step #3: Exercise

You also improve your capillaries, the blood vessels which carry oxygen to the cells – the more oxygen, the better!

And of course, exercise is key in preventing and fighting disease. When you’re healthy, you’re less likely to feel tired.

Exercise really does help give you more energy.

It doesn’t have to be vigorous exercise (unless you want to!) – just going for a walk is hugely beneficial.

How to Get More Energy Step #4: Sleep

As we age, though, it seems to be harder to sleep soundly. And lack of sleep is often cited by seniors as one reason for lack of energy during the day.

Avoid sleeping pills where possible though.  Lifestyle changes are more beneficial, and more eco-friendly.

For example, drink less alcohol during the evening hours, and avoid heavy meals before bedtime.

How to Get More Energy Step #5: Accomplish

Spend your energy wisely.

Spend some time thinking about what you enjoy doing. Then work out how you can make sure you do those things.

Fill your mind with determination to meet the goals.

Prioritize what you do each day, so that you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment when the day is over.

How to Get More Energy Step #6: Eat Well

So, adopt an energy-inducing diet.

Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables is paramount to maintaining energy and keeping your body healthy so it’s ready to meet the challenges of aging.

And of course, fruit and veggies are much more green and eco-friendly than meat and processed foods.

Aging – A State of Mind?

Sometimes aging is more a state-of-mind than the state of our bodies.

Find something you enjoy doing and make sure you prioritize those activities into your daily plans.

Getting older is no longer an excuse for lack of energy!

Surround yourself with positive people who enjoy doing some of the things you love and you’ll be more energetic and ready to meet life head-on.
