Do you remember Erin Brockovich?

Julia Robert starred in the film that made Brockovich famous for being the modern-day David taking on Goliath.

Brockovich was a divorced single parent when she found – and proved – that Pacific Gas & Electric (PGE) were discharging toxins into the water of the small town of Hinkley.  People were ill, but nothing was being done.

Brockovich took them on, and it was thanks to her bravery and tenacity that in 1996 the utility giant was forced to pay out the largest toxic tort injury settlement in US history.

Since then, Brockovich has become a champion for personal empowerment, and for encouraging people to make a difference.

“We think it’s odd that we have 15 kids on our street with leukemia”  [one of the 50,000 emails Brockovich receives every month from people reporting health issues in their communities]

In a recent interview with the Huffington Post, she explained that her latest film, “Last Call at the Oasis” focuses on the growing global water crisis, but with an emphasis also on the USA – the problems with Lake Mead near Las Vegas, for example, as well as the contamination of water at the Marine Corps’ Camp Lejeune.

“Corporations in communities need to be better neighbours.  Communities … want jobs.  But they don’t want to be poisoned”.  [Erin Brockovich]

“Last Call at the Oasis” opened at select theatres on May 4th.

  • Erin Brockovich is a very brave and much admired lady, but it needs many more to stand up and be counted.

  • Clare,
to be first and break the conformity takes courage. It is so extraorsinary and that’s why people talk about it. The second one to follow has to be recognized too. Great point. Thank you.

  • WOw, I was not aware of Erin’s continued advocacy past PGE. Good for her.

  • We can’t keep thinking that clean water is going to be around forever. Dirty water doesn’t occur just in third world countries we can see it all around us. A big thank you to Ms. Brokovich for her continued work.

  • Hi Green Goddess,

I like the tie in with Lake Mead and Las Vegas because I am quite familiar with the area. Plus there is the Atomic Bomb museum in Las Vegas. There has been a long history of toxins in the area. Las Vegan locals often are folks who live in LV Clark County for only a few years, so being able to tie the toxins to health issues for them could be quite challenging. And people are affected with the drinking water all the way to Los Angeles because of the Hoover Dam.
