Just Re-Grow Them – It’s Easy!
So, when you use fresh vegetables like onions, garlic and potatoes, what do you do with the scraps, the parts you don’t eat? Do they go into the compost? Or into the garbage? No more! You can re-grow these left-over scraps so you have a constant supply – it’s really, really easy – and you’ll never buy these foods again!
Isn’t that a great way to save money? (And reduce your carbon footprint too).
Here’s how.
Spring Onions, Leeks, Scallions, Fennel
Take the white lower stalk and the roots and place them root-end down in a jar of water. In just a few days, it will start to re-grow! Just replace the water with fresh when it needs it.
Soon you’ll have a continual supply of these useful alliums, ready whenever you need them for cooking or in salads.
Ginger
When you buy ginger, take a one-inch piece and plant it in potting soil with the newest buds facing up. It will soon start to re-grow shoots and roots!
Ginger is happiest in a warm, moist environment with indirect sunlight.
When the plant is well-established and you are ready to harvest, pull up the whole plant including the roots. Then take a piece and re-plant it to continue the cycle.
Onions
Onions are incredibly simple! Cut off the root end of the onion, leaving about 1/2 inch or 1 cm of onion with the roots. Then place it root down in your garden or in a container where there’s sun, and cover with a little soil.
Keep the soil moist and your onions will re-grow.
Keep re-planting roots and you’ll never have to buy onions again!
Other Foods
Re-growing from roots is much easier (and quicker) than growing from seed!
Of course you can also grow potatoes, sweet potatoes and pineapples from scraps too, they just take a bit more space.
I planted my first pineapples about 2 years ago so I’m expecting to be able to harvest soon-ish – they take about 2 to 3 years so you need more patience with pineapples than with the other foods.
Again, just keep planting regularly so you have a regular supply.
You’ll never buy these foods again – you’ll have your own constant supply of the foods you enjoy!
Organic
Because you’re growing these vegetables fresh yourself, you’ll know that they are totally organic, there are no pesticides, herbicides or any other nasties on your food. That’s real peace of mind!
