Non-Toxic Remedies for Your Healthy Home

Make Your Own Non-Toxic Remedies – They’re Easy, and They Work!

easy non toxic remediesThese quick and easy non-toxic remedies are a great way to save money and keep your home free of the toxic chemicals found in oh-so-many commercial products.

Discover how to make your own carpet or rug freshener, moth repellent, mold remover and fabric softener!

Non-Toxic Remedies: Fabric Softener

Fabric softeners are often added to washing machines while washing clothes, and also to driers.

They work by coating the surface of the cloth fibres with a thin layer of chemicals which makes the fibres feel smoother and prevents the build-up of static electricity.  (Some manufacturers also claim their product makes clothes easier to iron and more stain-resistant).

Of course, clothes smell best if they’ve dried outdoors in the fresh air.  But if you need to use a drier, then don’t add those nasty artificial smells to your clothing.  You’ll reduce the chemicals on your clothes if you make your own fabric softener.

Luckily, it’s easy to do!

  • Mix 25-30 drops of your favourite essential oil (lavender and rosemary are popular) with 1 gallon / 4 litres white vinegar
  • Use 1/3 cup per full load of clothes.

It leaves a faint smell, not strong at all.

Non-Toxic Remedies: Repel Moths

You don’t want moths attacking your clothes, but mothballs aren’t very pleasant.  A toxin-free alternative is easy to make and effective.

  • Soak a cotton ball with 6-8 drops of patchouli essential oil and place it in your closet, cupboard or wardrobe.

Non Toxic Remedies: Remove Mould

Mold is not pleasant, and it can lead to allergies and respiratory problems.  Again, essential oils can help, providing an easy, non-toxic solution.

  • 2 teaspoons tea tree oil
  • 2 cups / 500ml water
  • Mix together in a spray bottle.  Spray onto the mould and surrounding area – don’t rinse, leave it on.

Some people prefer this alternative:

  •  Mix ½ cup of distilled white vinegar with 10 drops of lavender essential oil in a spray bottle.  Spray onto the mould and surrounding area – don’t rinse, leave it on.

Non Toxic Remedies: Freshen Carpets

Before you vacuum, sprinkle baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) onto rugs and carpets, and leave for 10-15 minutes.  Then hoover it all up.  Your carpets and rugs will smell fresher and in some cases, the colours may look brighter too.

You don’t need to use it every time you vacuum (too much and you risk clogging the machine), but every now and again, it works wonders!

You can also add some essential oil to the baking soda for a pleasant aroma.

Tip:  store the mixture in an old jam jar, and punch holes in the lid to make the perfect sprinkler, or use an old spice jar with holes already in the lid.
