Old Tires are a Scourge. They’re Either Dumped or Burned – a Problem. Now There’s a Solution
What can be done about the problem of old tires? Sometimes they’re burned, giving off toxic fumes. Sometimes they’re dumped. Whatever happens to them, it’s rarely good – for us or for the planet.
So I was delighted to see the solution outlined in the video below.
A company in the Netherlands recycles old tires, using a special process which converts them into ink, carpets and car parts. They get a new lease on life, and don’t pollute or litter – wow!
Billions of used tyres are thrown away each year, causing pollution. A company called Black Bear Carbon heats up the old tires, breaking down the rubber into pellets containing a substance called Carbon Black.
The pellets are sent to manufacturers. They might be used to create ink for your pen, or the keys on your computer keyboard.
There’s still material left over though. So it’s converted into oil and gas – it’s not exactly “clean” but it doesn’t use new fossil fuels, so that’s a huge step forward. And that oil and gas is used to heat the rubber of more old tires ….. so its a nice, renewable circle.
The company isn’t just zero carbon, it’s negative carbon, which is wonderful.
The statistics in the video about the equivalent number of trees, however, are slightly misleading. As is the amount of fossil fuels being saved. But it’s significant, nonetheless.
And it’s a great way of giving new life to old tires.
