Save Money on Major Purchases

Get your timing right

Yesterday I talked about how saving money on necessary purchases avoids wasteful spending, thus allowing you to make green, sustainable choices.  Today I look at how you can save money on big-ticket items, simply by choosing to buy at the right time of year.

And Fall / Autumn is a great time for bargains!

If you are considering a major purchase, you can avoid paying a premium by simply planning your purchase for the right time of year.

Car manufacturers, for example, will be rolling out their new models soon, so car dealers want to clear their ‘old’ inventory and they are currently offering great discounts.  New models almost always cost more than their older versions (there’s often a price hike even if the model has only been tweaked a little), and you’re less likely to get a discount on a new model.

If you are concerned that you won’t have the very latest and most up-to-date model, remember that as soon as you drive it out of the showroom door it is already out of date.  Its novelty will last perhaps a month.

Of course, you will be looking for the most fuel-efficient car and avoiding gas-guzzling SUVs – although there are more efficient SUVs available now.  Seriously consider if you truly need a really large car.

More green would be to invest in a bike (or grow your own bike!) and again, store owners are keen to release their summer inventory to make way for newer models.

The same goes for kayaks.

Also plan ahead and think about buying a snowboard, snowshoes or skis now rather than paying more in winter.

Now is also a great time to buy a new lawn mower – tomorrow’s blog is all about saving money in the garden.

  • Here is a tip on car buying that a male friend told me about yesterday…he is selling his older car but hanging on to it for a few months longer as it is in good condition and low mileage and just about to become in the age range of a “classic” and thus much more valuable. AH! Some things DO improve with age!!!

  • And if you have an old car, never sell it to the dealer. Sell it on your own. You’ll get a better deal for it. And make sure to give it a super-good cleaning first. The value goes up with the cleaner it looks, since the buyer assumed you took good care of it.

  • The new model approach works really well. Especially if there is a body change to a product. I once was able to obtain a superior air conditioner for a client at half the price because the company had decided to switch its color from brown to green.
