The Best Herbs and Oils to Stop Snoring
A large number of people either snore, or listen to snoring most nights (I’m one). There are lots of jokes about snoring, but it’s not much fun at 3:17am while you’re trying to get your beauty sleep. So, how do you stop snoring?
I always like to try natural methods first, and there are some useful herbs which may help. Of course, herbal, natural remedies are much more green and ecofriendly than medication (or strange gadgets bought over the internet!).
Let’s look first at what causes snoring, and then review natural ways to stop snoring.
What Causes Snoring?
The causes of snoring are quite well-known:
- A common cause of snoring is mucus in the air passages and sinuses.
- Nasal and sinus problems may cause air to be constricted, which then causes the mouth to open and the palantine uvula (the bobbly bit at the back of your mouth) to pulsate.
- Interestingly, indigestion is also a frequent cause! Excess acid in the stomach causes the problem.
- Stress and tension can also cause people to snore.
Which Natural Herbs Can Help to Stop Snoring?
These herbs can all help, depending on the cause of the snoring.
Eucalyptus helps open the air passages by clearing the mucous. How to take eucalyptus: place a few drop of eucalyptus essential oil in an air diffuser, or use a steam inhaler to ingest eucalyptus through your mouth and nose. Clearing your sinuses will help to stop snoring.
Peppermint is similar to eucalyptus in that it is an excellent herbal decongestant. It can clear mucous, opening the air passages. The menthol can soothe the throat and sinuses, as well as help to loosen phlegm. How to take peppermint: drink peppermint tea as you go to bed, or put a few drops of peppermint essential oil onto your pillow or in an air diffuser.
Eating an immature bitter orange at bedtime may help with nasal and sinus problems It is loaded with vitamin C which can help boost the immune system leading to clear sinuses.
Spearmint relieves snoring by reducing excess acid in the stomach, thus treating indigestion. You can drink spearmint in a tea, or take it in powder, oil, liquid or capsule form.
Both lavender and chamomile are known for their stress-reducing properties (they also help with sleep disorders). Drink chamomile or lavender tea as you go to bed, or add a few drops of lavender and chamomile essential oil into a diffuser.
