Many people (including me) have a sweet tooth.

We enjoy eating sweet foods.

And there’s nothing wrong with that!

However, if you want to eat healthily, or eat clean, or lose some weight, then the normal foods that satisfy a sweet tooth won’t work.

And it’s difficult to eat clean if you feel deprived.

If you are dieting or eating clean, you’ll want to avoid foods like cookies or biscuits, cakes, doughnuts, and candy or sweets.

Sure, that won’t worry some people (like my husband) (it’s not fair!), but if you like something sweet for a snack or dessert, then it’s problematic.

Luckily, there are things you can do to satisfy your sweet tooth so you won’t feel deprived, but you’ll still be eating clean and healthily.

Here are 5 things you can enjoy.

1. Eat Popcorn for a Sweet Tooth

Try popping popcorn in just a little bit of salt and butter or, better yet, choose air popped popcorn. (It’s more green and eco friendly, and healthier too).  There’s no sugar in popcorn, it’s great to munch on, and it even contains insoluble fiber which is great for your digestion.

2. Enjoy Sweet Fruits to Satisfy a Sweet Tooth

 

Fresh fruit from local farmersImagine some yummy sweet strawberries, or a sweet melon such as a honeydew or cantaloupe…. Fresh fruit contains fructose (a type of sugar) but no table sugar. Fruits also contain lots of nutrients, vitamins and fibre, so they’re good for you as well as tasting great. And they’ll leave you feeling more satisfied than a sugary snack.

Remember to eat the whole fruit, not just the juice.  This is because the whole fruit is high in fiber, which can temper the amount of sugar going into the bloodstream so there will be no wide fluctuations in blood glucose levels.

3. Dark Chocolate is Perfect for a Sweet Tooth

Dark chocolate or cocoa will give you the feeling you are eating something sweet (after all, it IS chocolate!) but it has health benefits because it’s high in anti-oxidants. Eat a couple of squares of dark chocolate for dessert or a nighttime snack and you’ll feel as though your sweet tooth has been satisfied. You can also drizzle dark chocolate on popcorn …….

4. Some Veggies Really Work for a Sweet Tooth

Try eating some corn for the natural sweetness it provides as part of your meal. Corn on the cob is especially good and contains fibre.

Cut up carrots and celery and enjoy them with a vegetable dip – you’ll feel like you are munching on something decadent.

5. Drink Milk Before Bed for a Sweet Tooth

 

milk for a sweet toothMilk is high in protein and has milk sugar in it, which is different from table sugar. A nice warm glass of milk can satisfy your need to have something to snack on just before bedtime and will provide you with the necessary daily allotment of calcium and vitamin D.

(Just don’t buy the low-fat or fat-free milk – it contains artificial additives which are not healthy and often increase cravings).

If you’re vegan, choose a nut milk such as almond or cashew milk.
