Use Lemons

Use Lemons in So Many Ways – They’re Amazing!

use lemons to cleanLemons are so handy!

Of course we already know that we can use lemons for a wonderful cleaning agent – they disinfect, deodorize, de-grease and remove stains all in one wipe!

But there’s so much more!

  • Lemon zest (just scrape little pieces from the outer layer) adds great flavour to foods – add it to risottos, cakes. biscuits or cookies and more to add a little extra zing.
  • Lemons are a natural and safe insect repellent.
  • Lemon peel is a wood cleaner and natural polish.
  • Lemon juice stops fruit and vegetables from going brown after you’ve sliced them – apples and avocados for example.
  • They are a great marinade for fish.

How to Store Them

You can leave lemons out at normal room temperature for about a week – but they will begin to dry out.  If you’re not going to use them immediately, refrigerate them.

If you need to store them for up to a month, place them in a ziplock bag and squeeze out the air, then store them in the fridge.

Lemon juice can be stored in the refrigerator for about four days (make sure that you strain out the seeds, as they will cause the lemon juice to become bitter).

If you want to store lemon juice for longer amounts of time, freeze it. One really easy way is to pour it into an ice tray.  Once the juice is frozen into cubes, store the cubes in a ziplock bag in the freezer for several months.

To preserve lemon zest, store it in the freezer in an airtight freezer bag.

Lemon Safety

Lemons, lemon juice and lemon essential oil are all non-toxic – use lemons internally and externally safely. However, a small number of people find that lemon juice or oil may cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction. If you’re unsure, test lemon products on a small area of the skin. If you don’t have a reaction, you can enjoy lots of lemons!

Lemons, their juice and lemon oil are phototoxic. This means that when exposed to sunlight, a chemical reaction can cause skin irritation similar to sunburn. To be extra safe, don’t take lemons either internally or externally prior to sun exposure.

Lemons really are amazingly versatile, and they are also a natural, drug-free, safe cure for many ailments – see Lemons Cure

  • Great tips, Clare. I also read that you can keep lemons from drying out if you put them in a bowl of water, I haven’t tried this so don’t know if it works.
