How Will You Look at 100 Years Old?

Will you Live to 100? How Will You Look and Feel at 100 Years Old?

100 years old

Living to 100 years old is certainly possible today – we can all aspire to it. But the question is, if you live to the ripe old age of 100, how will you feel? Will you be bed-ridden, or still independent and able to do what you choose?

I’ve just been reading an article about people who not only want to live till they’re 100 years old, but they also want to be healthy, active and able.

So, they’re training for their centenarian lives!

Here’s a great example. Susan Wilder is training for 2062, the year when she will be 100 years old. Wilder, 57, still wants to be able to travel, garden, play with her great-grandchildren and move around comfortably. They’re all things she can do now – but she’s getting fit to make sure she can still do them in 43 years.

Isn’t that a fascinating thought? I love it!

It’s a sad fact that for so many people, at a stage in their lives when they have time on their hands, with no responsibilities, they are unable to do the things they enjoy. Like golf, gardening and travelling, for example.

But it IS possible!

It’s All About Strength

Think about it. Carrying groceries up a flight of stairs, putting a suitcase in an overhead bin and getting off the floor with a single point of support – these are all things that are easy when you’re younger, but not when you’re 100 years old

Strength is key to staying physically independent later in life. Research suggests that even minor improvements in muscular strength will let you maintain independence and strength, and push back frailty and instability.

What Happens As We Age?

As we age, our bodies start to lose muscle mass and bone density – on average, you will lose up to 5% of their muscle mass every decade after the age of 30. Men tend to retain more muscle mass than women.

But you can regain that lost muscle mass by exercising and keeping active – and you should start building muscle as early as pokeep fit now for 100 years oldssible, and then maintain it.

It Sneaks Up!

Even though your body changes gradually (you often aren’t aware of it), something might happen to make you realize you’re not as young as you used to be.  Perhaps you can’t pick up your grandchildren as easily, or get up off the floor without something to hold on to.  That’s when you realise that aging sneaks up on you!

When Should You Start to Prepare for 100 Years Old?

Ideally from birth, you should prepare to live to 100! The earlier you start to maintain muscle mass, the stronger you will be later in life and the easier it will be to maintain.

But the good news is, it’s never too late to start!

Some of the people preparing for their “hundreds” say they want to be able to go to Disneyland with their grandkids and great-grandkids without being in a wheelchair

It’s Also About Fear

All over the world, peoples’ biggest fear about ageing was becoming totally dependent on others -and not being able to get the help they need.

And it’s true! We tend to associate 100 year old mangrowing old with dependency and disability.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. If you prepare for old age, you’ll cope so much better.

Good Advice

As well as building and maintaining muscle as you age, it’s also important to be positive, according to the people who are succeeding.

Their advice is to note “magic moments” – things that are unusual or wonderful. It’s amazing how many things you come across if you look for them! Examples are sunrises, hummingbirds, shooting stars, a spider’s web with morning dew growing on a bonsai….

And as one delightful 100 year old lady, who has been active all her life, says:-

You have to keep doing what you’re doing as long as you can do it

So …..

If you want to die young at a very old age, start preparing now!
