Where to buy environmentally-friendly home stuff

If you live in the US, do you know about Green Depot?  It’s a green version of Home Depot.  They sell environmentally-friendly building and home living products.  They want sustainable practices to be easily adopted into standard construction operations.

Each product they sell has been passed through their ‘green filter’ which looks at quality and values.  They focus on

• Health
• Durability
• Performance
• Life Cycle
• Conservation of Natural Resources
• Energy Conservation

This filter helps customers to avoid green-washing claims.

Apart from the products they sell, they also ‘green’ their stores.  In 2007 Green Depot was one of the first businesses in New York to install a photo-voltaic array (solar power) in their Brooklyn store, and in 2009 they converted their NYC trucking fleet to run on bio-diesel sourced from recycled NYC restaurant grease.

And they have a full online store where you can buy online and have it delivered.

Oh yes, and I like it too because it’s certified woman owned.

Their products display icons which show at a glance why they are eco-friendly

For example, they might be energy-saving products, or locally produced, or recycled.

So, if you need eco-friendly products for your home, shop at Green Depot if there’s one close to you. 

PS I have no connection with Green Depot, I just think they have gone to a lot of trouble to set up their filtering system and come up with icons which show you easily why products are eco-friendly and in what way.
