The Win-Win of Recycling
Eco friendly initiatives, and a win-win – perfect!
That’s what I thought when I heard about a recycling company called RecycleBank.
RecycleBank is a company which, well, recycles things. The great part is that they’ve set up incentives – the more people recycle, the more points they earn. And these points can then be used for discounts not just at RecycleBank, but also at local and national reward partners such as Macy’s and Coca Cola.
It’s good for the company – they gain publicity and they grow, and it’s good for the planet – less waste to landfill sites. And it’s good for residents too – the more they recycle, the more points they earn. It’s nice to be rewarded for doing eco friendly things.
RecycleBank are utilising the incredible collective impact of individual actions, and that’s great.
More than 300 communities across the United States and the United Kingdom have implemented Recyclebank. Over the course of a year, an average family can earn hundreds of points that can be redeemed for special rewards. Recyclebank members earn an average of $160 in rewards value each year.
Of course, let’s not forget that Recycling is the LAST of the 3 Rs (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle), and Reducing has more of an impact on the planet than Recycling.
So, while it’s nice to get rewards for recycling, remember also to “vote with your wallet” by Reducing your purchases (and therefore waste) in the first place, and by making sure that you buy products made by eco friendly companies.
After all, it makes sense to support green businesses rather than overly large corporations such as Big Oil for example. Supporting green companies means creating green jobs.
Green jobs in a cleaner, healthier world sound like another win-win to me!
