Yes. Stop Eating Fat-Free Foods – Now!

OK, we’ve all indulged in one-(or-two)-too-many drinks or desserts. (I certainly did!). It’s time to get back to healthier eating.  (Sigh).

And if (like me), you’re not too keen to look at your bathroom scales right now, you’ll probably want to lose a pound or two.

So, what do you do? You look for fat-free foods like yogurt or cheese or “slimline” mixers.

We’ve been told these fat-free foods and drinks are a guilt-free way to carry on indulging.

But they’re not!

Why Fat-Free Foods Are So Bad

In order to remove or reduce the fat in dairy products, they are heavily processed. That’s already bad, because making healthy choices means eating lots of fresh, whole foods, not processed.

But it gets worse.

reduce sugar ravingsWithout the fat, there’s almost no flavour. So artificial flavouring is added. As well as artificial sweeteners like aspartame.  Or lots of sugar, or (in the US) HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) which is even worse for you than sugar!

And some of these additives are really, really bad for your health.

A 2015 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that

  • people who ate more high-fat dairy products, had a lower risk of diabetes.
  • Those who ate a lot of low-fat dairy products had the highest incidence of diabetes.

The researchers believe that the nutrients in dairy (calcium, protein, vitamin D and more) are better absorbed and used by your body when you also eat the natural fats that go along with them.

You Get Hungrier

If you want to lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than you use. (OK, it’s a little more complex than that, but let’s keep it simple here).

these aren't fat-free foodsWhen you eat processed foods, you feel full initially, but soon after your meal, you’re hungry again. Think about going to a McDonald’s and eating a meal and feeling full – but after a short while, you want more food.

So low-fat foods actually make you eat more!

You’re much better off eating full-fat foods (in moderation) than eating processed low-fat or fat-free foods.

You’ll find, for example, that a full-fat, plain Greek yogurt will keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer than if you had eaten a fat-free yoghurt.

The Same Calories?

And there’s another problem with fat-free foods. Many low-fat products are high in carbs and may contain trans-fats (the bad fats). They might also contain a similar calorie count to the original full-fat product.  Well, that really defeats the object, doesn’t it?

When you eat high-carb foods, your body digests them more quickly. This can lead to blood sugar swings and cravings – and that makes it more difficult for you to control how much you eat.

In fact, if you eat a lot of low-fat or fat-free products, it can be as unhealthy as a high-fat diet because it increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease and causes high cholesterol levels.

Don’t be fooled by low-fat or fat-free or reduced-fat foods and drinks – eat whole foods instead. Your body will thank you!
