Which is More Green – A Top or Front Load Washing Machine?
Luckily it’s quite an easy answer.
Front load washing machines are more green and eco friendly than top load machines.
So, if you want to green your laundry, use a front loader.
However, there are some drawbacks you need to know about…..
Why Front Load Washing Machines Are Greener
You save water – top load washing machines soak your clothes in water, so more water is used to cover them all. A front loader however makes the clothes tumble through a much smaller volume of water – up to 40 percent less!
You save energy – front loaders (especially newer models and Energy Star or energy efficient models) use less energy than older machines. Plus, front loaders have high-speed spin cycles that remove more water than older models do, so you not only save drying time, you also save energy if you need to use a drier to tumble-dry your clothes.
You save your clothes – front load machines don’t have agitators so the washing cycle is much more gentle, cutting down on wear and tear of your clothes.
The Downside of a Front Load Washing Machine
Just be aware that front loaders do also have a few drawbacks:
- Depending on where they are placed, and depending on you personally, you may find it more difficult to take clothes out of a front loader.
- Front loaders use rubber gaskets or seals to keep the water in (top load washing machines don’t need one), and those gaskets can get dirty and need to be cleaned. They may also attract mould. Luckily this is an easy problem to solve – see here.
New vs. Old
Just a final quick word. If you have a top load washing machine, don’t throw it out and buy a new one just to be green. Because the environmental impact of the manufacture of a new machine outweighs the energy and water savings you’ll make.
On the other hand, if your old machine is really old, and you decide it’s time to buy a new one, be sure to buy a front loader to conserve water and energy.
