A round-up of this week’s environmental, green and ecofriendly news and updates.

top 10 green tips - buy green and localAll too often we come across the power – and influence – of Big Oil. From tax breaks and subsidies to rules and regulations that are so weak that they really don’t affect their profit much at all, fossil fuel power seems to affect every political decision

So I was delighted to read about billionaire Tom Steyer.  He’s famous for turning $15 million into $30 billion in about two decades. And recently, he’s been using his wealth for good. He founded NextGen Climate, an organization that advocates for policies and politicians that help the environment and advance renewable energy – to the tune of $170 million!

And right now, the environment needs all the help we can give it.

acupressure how toI’ve been reading up about acupressure –  an ancient Chinese method of relieving pain. It’s very interesting.

I’ve been trying it out.

Here’s what you need to know.

fracking gas flare burnoff

Fracking. Ugh. A very high-risk way to get fossil fuel oil and gas out of the ground.

The risks are many, from contaminated water to oil spills to nose-diving property values to air pollution from flaring and more.

It’s been difficult to get accurate data on the damage, since it’s often not required by law, and the requirements vary in different places. A new US study says that about 16 percent of all fracking wells leak.

16 percent is way, way, way too high. Especially when the very water we need to survive is at risk.

age gracefully with cream and a holistic approachWe can’t avoid getting older. But I think most of us would like to age gracefully.

It IS possible!

Global Green News:

All over the world tigers are struggling to survive due to habitat destruction and poaching for their body parts. But there is some good news. A small group of critically endangered Indochinese tigers has been discovered in Thailand. Conservationists said the success was due to the stepping-up of anti-poaching efforts in Thailand.

I love it when technology is used for good! A much-loved pet dog went missing in Wales, UK. Search parties failed to find her, and a local caving club searched old mine shafts. Her owners then used Facebook to set up a Go Fund Me account – which quickly raised £1,500 to pay for a helicopter search. But a local drone company offered their services for free. Using a drone fitted with a thermal camera, the missing and terrified dog was found in an old mining tunnel within 20 minutes.

A new report shows that Nature is a solution to obesity and depression. In urban areas with more trees, doctors prescribed fewer antidepressants, according to a London study. And in Denmark, people living within 330 yards of green spaces were less likely to be obese and more likely to engage in rigorous exercise.

US Green News:

most destructive business - energy generationNo, I’m not going to discuss the dreadful roll-backs of the clean energy plan. It’s all been said already.

How much was climate change covered by the major American TV networks in 2016? When you add it all up – the combined figure is just 50 minutes. 50 minutes in a whole year from all the big networks combined!!

Other insights from the study:

  • Together, the networks aired five segments of climate science denial from Trump and his team — without rebuttal.
  • No network covered climate change’s impact on national security or the economy.
  • None aired a single segment on the effect a Trump or Clinton presidency would have on the climate — until after the election.
